Full barrel length rail??

Hey,
I'm expecting my shortened (16.25") 308 back soon. I have the Advanced Technology "ShotForce" tactical forend and pistol grip adjustable buttstock. What I'm thinking about is a full length or at least extended picatinny rail. I like the long eye relief scopes and forward mounted red dots, and like the idea of some back-up irons. I'm undecided about how I want to mount it though. Utilize the 3 base holes to keep it straight and fill in under the rest with something like steel bed or putty to achieve a solid permanent mounting system. Would this tend to degrade accuracy or serve to stiffen the barrel thus even further reducing whip??

Anyone ever seen anything like this, or thought about it. Suggestions, concerns, advise???

I would probably just have new screw holes drilled farther down the barrel for a forward mounted base.

A couple of thoughts.  One what is the barrel contour.  The heavier barrel the less effect the application of such a rail would have.  The long eye relief will be important, because the shotforce stock set is so light that gun will move around alot.  Unless your going for some kind of porting or muzzle break.  Open sights will probally have to mounted on the rail, the flip up ar back up type.  Any rail will interfere with the rear sights if mounted on the barrel.  I looked at the ebay link you posted and the 1022 rear sight was out of the game, nice they put the cut out, that was so they can say no gunsmithing needed.  put it together with out the rail and scope fire 8 or 10 rounds and see if works for you before you go hog wild on the next step.

I don't know if the "Bull Barrel" on the H&R is a straight contour or if it still has a taper to it.. If it has a straight contour, you could buy an aftermarket Picatinny Blank, wrap your barrel with sand paper, and make the bottom of the blank contoured to your barrel. To attach it, you would probably have to use an epoxy or similar bonding agent. If your barrel has a tapering contour... that process would be a heck of a lot harder.

H&R bull barrels are actually heavy barrels, they're tapered, not straight, the chamber swell is 1.1", just ahead of the chamber swell it steps down quicky to ~1", then tapers to a muzzle diameter of ~.800".

Thanks for that information! Someone with enough skill could probably get a ramp type of thing underneath the rail that would level it out against the taper of the barrel. I don't know if the Original Poster will want to go through all that heartache though...

I have decided my course of action  ;)  My barrel is not a bull barrel and has the significant step down.
I found an old rail from "Mech-Tech" it's 17.5" long and has rear-peep, front post sights protected by ears, it attaches to weaver/picatinny slots on bottom and accepts them on top. I will remount the factory scope base, install this rail to that and then I have a QD 3 slot riser that I will slowly grind down until it mates the bottom of the rail to the barrel and then use some steel putty to make it permanent. I'll be able to attach my scope, a red dot, or scout scope  8)
