Your opinion on what crimp I need (.44Mag)
« on: May 24, 2013, 04:29:53 AM »
I usually buy Lee dies, now I have the choice of roll crimping my .44mag cartridges or if I buy the deluxe pistol set of dies I can choose only to use the factory crimp die. In the T/C, what do you guys recommend?

For cartridges I need to crimp, I prefer the Lee Factory Crimp Die.  For 44 Remington Magnum cartridges, roll crimping with your bullet seating die should also work fine.

That said, you don't need to crimp cartridges to be shot in a single shot firearm.  For low pressure loads, I've found crimping to improve accuracy though.

crimp is needed only when using the slower burning, hard to ignite powders, and when bullet movement either deeper into the case from forces encountered within a tube magazine, or when in a revolver the bullets try to move out of the case during recoil.  I do not use any added crimp with my single shot guns chambered in .44 mag.

In my Ruger Super RedHawk, on the other hand, I use a roll crimp, the factory crimp Lee die seems to shorten case life.  Now if you have the collet die, and do not bevel the inside of the necks, try it.

Depends on the powder. I like H110 and Lilgun, and use a factory Lee Crimp Die for crimping.

Thanks for the replies, you gave me an understanding of crimping, not-crimping, and powder burn rate In the single loading firearm I now understand better.  Learning is good...  ;D    .DT

I have found noticeable gains in accuracy and consistency when using H110 in my .44's and using a heavy crimp.
I hate when i miss. But when I do, I can always come up with a reason why.

I offer this only as a suggestion to further your understanding.  Buy and Read at least three reloading manuals, Speer, Lyman, and Hornady or Sierra.  They all explain things very well, seeing it in print and stated three different ways should allow you to understand the process completely.  Since anyone can post anything on the internet the information here is suspect at best.
