Usually target shooters like black sights with a sharp front post. Good self defense sights usually involve high visibility, with a slight loss in the sharp sight picture of true target sights.
With home defense as a criteria, along with the consideration my eyes are not getting any younger, I vote for the high visibility offered by Tritium or optic fiber sights. Personally, I like the Tru Glo line. They offer several combinations, that include Tritium (glow in the dark) and fiber optic (glow in natural light) together. I have a couple sets on handguns that did not come with night sites from the factory, including a S&W M&P 45c, and they work well, and are not that expensive. Not as durable as standard metal fixed sights with no inserts, they are durable enough unless you make a habit of constantly banging your gun off hard objects, and provide a much quicker sight picture in almost all lighting conditions.
