44 mag on SB1 shotgun frame?
« on: May 29, 2013, 12:44:53 PM »
Has anyone ever sent a SB1 shotgun frame and had a .44 mag barrel  fit to it. There is supposed to be a difference in firing pin size, will this make a difference? Would it be Ok with factory hot loads?

Lots of folks have done it. The factory sends out 357 and 44 mag barrels on SB1 frames now and have for a few years.

I didn't know if there would be a problem if it was a shotgun frame instead of a rifle frame.

I have a 44 Mag and 357 Mag that were fitted to a SB1 that started out as a .410.  Haven't had any problems with the large firing pin.  Tried to move the 44 Mag to another SB1 with the large firing pin and the pin sticks in the primer.  Have to cock the hammer and pull the trigger a time or two to get the action open.  The loads were mid-level hand loads.  I'd guess it's more hit than miss having a 44 Mag on a a large firing pin SB1, but it's possible you'll have problems.

I had problems with my .357 barrel on a 20 ga sb1.  The pressure from factory rounds , not hot handloads, caused primer material to flow back around the firing pin into the bushing hole. one time could not even open the action. Put that barrel on our rifle frame and problem solved.

The frame I have is a 12 gauge frame . Maybe there is a difference between firing pins in the 12 gauge frame and the 410?

The only rifle barrels the factory will fit to SB1 shotgun frames are 357 and 44 mag.

Some SB1 frames have smaller rifle size firing pins as do the SB1 357 and 44 mag factory rifles. I had pierced primers with my first Maxi barrel shooting Dan Wesson 357 Maxi factory ammo on an SB1 shotgun frame, but they worked fine when I swapped the barrel to an SB2 frame. Firing pins vary from about .063" to near .100" in diameter, I suspect those on the larger size are those that will cause problems, or to be more precise, the larger hole in the standing breech face is to blame. My 12ga USH barrel cratered primers when shooting the 22 Hornet insert that Larry made me, it had a large pin.

My Tamer frames are in swap barrel sets that we put together (not factory fitted - factory fitting is not an option in Canada)... The sets are .22 LR/.22 K-H/.410... And again, no problems at all with these Tamer (nickel) frames.
