445 SM Load Data from M95 Steyr Project
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:38:48 AM »
Just sharing for your entertainment. Got out and did some more shooting/load developement for this years Hoosier deer rifle. This shot pretty well in my rifle and gave good accuracy without any over pressure singns. Recoil was moderate to slightly stout when compared to the 44 mag Hornady FTX 225 gr factory ammo used as a benchmark.
Rifle: M95 Steyr rebarreled to 445 SM. BL 19 inches.
Case: New Starline 445 SM
Primer: Win Mag LP
Powder: 28.7 gr H110
Bullet: Hrndy 265 Intlk FP
Velocity:
1. 1911 fps
2. 1943 fps
3. 1936 fps
4. 1927 fps
5. 1923 fps
Avg fps: 1928
Best of 3 shot group od to od 1.129-.430=.699 at 60 yrds
This was not the most accurate load of the day. I will post more when I get the data on file. The 445SM looks to be running about 200 to 250 fps behind 444 Marlin with this bullet. Not bad and it does not tear your arm off. Down range ballistics are estimated as follows:
Minute of Deer out to 200 yrds with a 3 inch high setting at 100 yrds should give you a bullet drop of 9 to 10 inches hitting at about 1270 fps with an estimated muzzle energy of 953 ft/lbs. Time of flight is about 1/3 of second at impact. The estimated TKO index at this range is 20.67 which puts it on par with a 44 magnum handgun at point blank range. Bullet goes subsonic around 275 yrds

This was the best load for that session.

The estimated TKO @ 200 yrds, if you believe in such a thing goes up slightly due to the increased velocity. Shot placement and good bullet expansion/wgt retention is still king IMHO. I calculated a valuer of 21.1 figured on the avg velicity which moves it up to equal a 30-06 170 gr bullet @ a mv of 2850 fps at point blank range.
