Beer Can Coehorn Powder Chamber Size
« on: June 05, 2013, 11:31:13 AM »
I've decided to make a beer can Coehorn for my next project and was wondering if I could get everyone with similar mortars to list:

Chamber dimensions
Powder quantity and granulation
Projectile weight
Range

Thanks. Hopefully it might help someone down the road to have this information all in once place as well.

Good Project.  I looked in the cannon plans sticky an only found one pop mortar listed. http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,85639.0.html

Here is one I built on the K.I.S.S. format http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php?topic=216011.0

Use shred's  google formula to search the board with google:

site:www.gboreloaded.com/forums popcan mortar

or

site:www.gboreloaded.com/forums beer can  mortar.

Other variations make beer can one word and pop can two words.

I have two projectiles-cans full of cement and zinc round ball.  Never have worried about weight.

I had Ed at  HMR make me a roundball mould for popcan bore and i sent it to Rotometals.  http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/zinc_cannon_ball.htm

$7 a ball may seem a bit dear, but as many time as you can shoot them they are well worth it.   I have 10 balls in pop can and have been shooting them over and over for 3 or 4 years now.

I am far from home right now, so I can not look up my powder charge.I use Cannon grade or Fg.   Just do what you should do with any new cannon.  Build you own range tables.  Start ridiculously low and build up charges in increments and record your ranges.  And don't get in a hurry.

By that I mean if you start with 25 grs, and the ball goes 20 feet.  Go up 5 grains and fire.  Don't go doing something like doubling to 50 gra..  You will be surprised the dramatic difference something like 5 grains will make.      If you keep track of the various ranges you then have load table so you shot at targets which is much more fun.

Range or how far can you fling them.  I have found shooting cement filled popcan beyond 300 yards you loose sight of them and it is just not fun.  I do not like shooting the round balls that far as they tend to bury themselves and you loose  them.

I no longer have the K.I.S.S. popcan mortar but I do still have my Dom Dictator popcan mortar.

Here's a link to a range test that was done.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,158308.0.html

The current size I use for a powder chamber in a beercan mortar is 1" diameter x 1.75" deep. That will hold about 250 grains of FFg BP.

Thanks Dom, I found that one a little later last night. It looks like the scaled Gomer chamber would have pretty close to the same capacity you use, so maybe I'm just over thinking things.

DD, I do plan to make my own range tables, I was mainly trying to get a general idea of how much powder would get me how far.

Jeff,

Were it so simple.  I have found that unless my powder chamber and barrel dimensions plus projectile matched the barrel that is the source of the information I don't get any where near the same results, usually not even ball park. Sometime yes, but mostly not.  And I do understand what you are asking for.  But since I am out in the middle of the Afghan desert right now I am unable to look up my  range tables for you.
