The brighter side
« on: June 05, 2013, 06:35:24 PM »
With all the "stuff" thats going on in our great country, I have to sometimes get back to the things that are really important to me. Like spending time with my boys, doing what we love, in the world the GOOD LORD provided for us. Two of my sons and I spent Memorial weekend remembering the grand times we shared with my Granddads, uncles and friends who've gone on ahead of us. I think they mighta been smiling down on us, too.

Ear, those came off our trot lines, along with 40 or 50 more blues and channel cats. we do keep a   couple of flatheads for the table each year but release most of 'em. All the blues over 20 go back, everything else gets a invite to a fish fry! These came outta a small [2200 acre] local  lake. Lake Murvaul to be exact. It pains me to see all the big flatheads that are being pulled outta there since "noodling" became legal in Texas. Not that I have anything againest it but I am afraid of what its gonna do to the fishery in the long run if its not regulated more. Honestly I saw over 25 head of big ones ;25 to 70 pounds; come outta that lake in 2 days while we were there. Thats at a little outta the way 1 lane ramp with primitive sites only. there are 3 better and bigger ramps on the lake.
I believe in the old saying about keepin' the youngun's "on the creeks and off the streets". Just wish Tim, my middle son, coulda joined us. He is stationed up @ Fort Reily Kansas and his leave got pushed back 'til later this month. Haven't seen him since New Years eve, thou we phone alot. Heck its not often we can all be together. Richie, the youngest, is back @ work in Pine Knot Tenn. He works for a com.company as a contracted installer.Won't be home 'til Fall most likly.

I'll be glad when you get them all back together again for a hot dog cook on up; good luck to you and your boys. My boy is trying to teach me to fish. He learned to hunt real well.

We kept most fish we caught trotlinin which were channel cat 5# and down mostly. A small river that had been cleared of snags and the curves cut out, basically a big ditch now. In the last century when it was named it was called Quiver River because so many springs ran into it that it would make you quiver if you got in it in the summer time.
-
The hand grabbers are the ones that let most of the big ones go around here for the reasons that you stated.

Fellas, my fondest mermories are those times spent on a creek or river bank in my youth with folks who've all past on now. Setlines for cats, handfishin' for what ever was biting, or following a couple of fiest dogs to a tree. Funny how most of 'em involve a meal cooked over a camp fire. I can taste most of 'em as I type this and havn't had a better meal since! I know the boys are building similar ones now and try to help it along as much as possible, while stacking up a few more myself. I guess I'm becoming a sentimental ol' fart 'cause the old times seem to be on my mind alot lately. All I can say is come what may,I ain't changing much and will pass on what I grew up to love to my boys as often as i can in the best way i know. By living it with them, doing it with 'em as often as possible. May not be politically correct these days, but I don't give a d***, Its what they need to experience, I think. Thanks for the replys,   Rick

Rick you are on the right track and it will be a memory that those boys will pass on to their younguns!
This is a picture of my youngest with a big red he caught, that look on his face is worth a million dollars.
