Old topper M48
« on: June 06, 2013, 02:23:39 AM »
Hello everyone. I’ve been trying to do my research and I do not have a clue. My grandfather died about a month ago and I was the one that got his old shotgun. It is in great condition for not really being kept up with and has not been fired since my grandparents were dating (they were married 57 years) so I’m trying to find out how old it is or anything since he was the only one that knew about it. It is a 20 gauge. From everything I have read there should be a letter that would tell how old it is. But I cannot find the letter. Any suggestions would be great.

Welcome! The M48 was made 1943-56, per Bill Goforth, not all M48s had serial numbers.

I have several of them and really like them.  They have the pretty case colored frame as yours does  plus a steel case colored forend spacer. None of mine have a serial number, two of them have a steel trigger guard and one has a plastic trigger guard, all have walnut stocks.
You can compare them to the newer Toppers and see where it would cost much more to produce a gun like the M 48 today.   Enjoy your older model H & R it looks to be in very nice condition and they are hard to find like that.
