Running out of Varget-what to use?
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:16:11 PM »
My AR and my Tikka like Varget but I'm down to about 3/4 of a pound. There doesn't seem to be any available so what would be about the same burn rate. Saw some Terminator at Sportsmans the other day. Know where I can get some Hodgens 414 , 780 and 760.Thanks, Don

From the Hodgdon 2013 Reloading manual burn rate list (fast to slow):

82.  Ramshot X-Terminator
99.  Varget
109. Win 760
110. H414
127. Win Supreme 780

You did not mention what calibers you are loading for but I assume the AR is 223. The powders you mentioned are way too slow burners. Powders around the burn rate of Varget include. IMR 4320, IMR 4064, RL 15, Accurate 2520 Winchester 748. Good luck finding ANY POWDER right now.

IMR or H 4895 is a good all around powder, if you can find it.  This link is to Hodgdens burn rate chart.  Best bet would be to read the loading manual, and see what powders provide good velocity and loading density for the cartridge you are loading, then see what is available.  You may fins another powder that is more accurate in your application.

Thanks guys, my AR is .223 and my Tikka is .243. I thought that terminator, that I saw at SW, said it was for .223. I think I will get some 414, for my .243, to try.

go to the Winchester , hodgon , IMR site , enter the reloading section and see all the powders you can use . Make a list the see what you can find . I use my reloading manuals but do the same thing these days. It's more about what you can find that will work over what works best.

win 748  reloader 15 and h4895 all
work good in my .223's
when i loaded .243 win regularly, i
used to use win785, but i don't think
they've made it for a long time.
h4895 works ok
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I think that I read some place that H414 and WW760 were the same powders like H110 and WW296 are. In my Hodgdon reloading manual they list the exact same load data for both with the same results. H414 is a good powder for the 243 in the burn rate of the 4350s but it is waaaaaaaay to slow burning for the 223.

FWIW , H4831 and IMR 4831 at least 10 or more years ago even though considered the same were a tad different ( and it may have been lots) but the H 4831 would not give the same group size as the IMR 4831. Everything else the same. I have been loading the IMR 4831 since the 80's and never had such a spread in group size. Reduced the load a grain and the group got tight.
So if you switch around you may have to alter the charge a wee bit.

I shoot mostly small capacity .224 stuff. Of the powders you listed, Terminator is the only one that I consider suitable for the 223. I have shoot a lot of TAC for heavy bullets in the 223, but Terminator is only slightly faster. I am loading up some (400+) 223 for my mini 14 and am using VV 133 (because I have a lot of it), Hornady 55 Gr SP and pull down LC brass. I just got 8 pounds of LT-32 from MidSouth and it is about right for the 223, but it is expensive - almost $30/pound with shipping and haz mat fees.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Got some Terminator and Hodgens 414 today. Will try the 414 in my .243. If the terminator works in the .223, they had a 8 pound container ;) .Don

You might want to head back and grab that 8 lb keg of Exterminator.  It is very similar to Accurate 2230 and I am very confident will work great in your .223.  I gambled on a pair of 8 lb'ers of Ramshot TAC a few years ago and have not regretted it.  Unless they are asking an arm and a leg for it, I would grab it.  The powder in shortest supply seems to be those for the .223 burning rate.  Anytime you can score some for a decent price, it would be prudent to buy some.

imr 3031  seems to be one of those forgotten powders .. i dunno why .. it works

i had some of my best groups with it in a .223   and .204 along with .308 and   45-70

i have always considered 3031 one of those must have powders for any reloader .. it is to versitile not to keep around

I like IMR 3031 in 222 Remington and 30-30 Win (with cast bullets)  I too am a big Varget fan. Hoarding my last 1/2 lb for deer rounds for my 6.5x55 sporter at the moment.

My AR didn't like the Terminator. Shot about 2"-3". The 414 shot great in my .243. Took some loads with Varget and they shot great in the AR. Oh well, a good try :-\ . Don

See if the locals have any H4895 (not IMR).  That is the sure cure for .223 accuracy.
