need help number 3 ruger peep
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:50:46 AM »

I have a number 3 ruger in 45-70. I want to peep sight it.  Any help or has any one done it successfully.
I have an old 2.5 weaver on it and it does work OK but I want to peep it. Remember no rib on this ruger.

You can do it, as I did. Get yourself a weaver Base (Rear#85). Then you have a choice between 2 rear sights. I went with the "XS Sight Systems, Back up peep sight" or the N.E.C.G. Peep sight to fit the weaver base.  Everything available through Brownell"s.

You'll probably need a taller front sight to work with this new rear sight too.

FWIW,  in his book, "Forty Years With The .45-70", Paul Mathews illustrated & described how he added a peep sight to his Ruger #3 Carbine.

If a Ruger No.1 has the factory scope ring cuts NECG makes a Ruger specific that is lots cleaner looking than the one that mounts on a Weaver base. IIRC it is low enough to possibly work with the factory front sight, but not sure. It is not a long range target sight; it is a fine field/hunting sight.
If you have no factory 'cuts' you should see if Nodak, Skinner or Williams has a model that has the same ctr to ctr holes as the rearmost Weaver base and just replace it straight in.
