Hi Guys,

Does anyone know where to get a decent wire round wire brush that would fit the diameter of a golf ball cannon?

The one that I use on my guns is a bit too small...

My solution was to get one that was a bit too large and take it to the grinder and grind it to fit as you rotated it on the stone.

Believe it or not it actually worked quite well. I was not sure, if a grinder would "grind" a wire brush. It does.

I have never felt the need for a brush in my cannons. Swabs have been all that I have needed.

Try Googleling tube and bottle brushes and see what you come up with.

You are unclear as to what you are needing to do.
I would expect a powered wire brush would scratch or worse the bore in a circular direction. I really hope that such cleaning is really not necessary except on an abused bore. I'd want to use other cleaning techniques first to get as much rust out as possible.
I turned a wooden "jag" with a bolt to match a bench rod for my last cannon... With a rag on said jag, I was able to pump Murphy's oil soap through the vent of the swivel cannon (1.25"). I oiled it down with oil on the rag after it dried.
The old gunsmith's standby for old abused smoothbores (shotguns) is a cleaning brush with fine steel wool wound into it, some solvent & a cordless drill. As long as it is lubed with the solvent/water mix it doesn't damage the bore... used sensibly.

MSC or Grainger both should carry various sizes in brushes....

Here is a brush very similar to what I use. The bristles bend slightly in my GB mortar.

I got one from grainger but i found a bottle nylon bristle brush works just great
Nice thing is it willl reduce down enouf to fit the powder chamber
Just wondering if any one hones there barrel after cleamning it
I hone my barrel just a little bit after it sat few hours after cleaning i use little olive oil or coconut oil on the stones

All great ideas!

The barrel isn't all that dirty and certainly no rust.
I will give the bottle brush a try, along with a good powder solvent/lube.

If anything is stubborn to get out, I will use the steel wool trick on the brush.

Hot, soapy water is the traditional black powder cleaning liquid. Although warm water is a little better as you get a chance to oil the bore before it starts to rust.

I found a refrigerator coil brush fits perfectly. I inserted it into the barrel until the taper of the brush contacted the interior sides, then cut the tip off at this point.

The people who made my barrel said to mix a 50/50 mix of kerosene and automatic transmission fluid.

Also to block the fuse hole with a little wax and to fill the barrel with this mixture and allow to sit over night.

Then dump, scrub and apply oil.

Seems a little harsh and labor intensive.

Traditionally swabbing is standard cleaning. I found a paint roller the right size. I cut a disc from another roller to cover the end of my dowel. Keep changing water. Spin the swab handle between 2 hands to free the dirt, grime & water from it. I ended up taking a caliper to Home Depot & measuring paint rollers. For my previous gun I made a real sheepskin swab... it worked fine but was pretty much over kill.

Just a heads up, I was in a local auto parts store (not a chain store but a real one) looking for a hitch pin (no luck there) and on the way out I saw a bunch of different sized bottle brushes. They were sized from under one inch all the way to two inches and about 18 inches long.. They were available in steel, bronze and nylon for about $3 each.
As a side note they also had what looked like shotgun brushes mounted on quarter inch hex drive shafts. I plan to go back later this week with calipers to get measurements.

"Moose Milk" (3 parts alcohol/2 parts hydrogen peroxide/1 part Murphy's Oil Soap) also is a great bore detergent.

Try a HVAC service supply warehouse and ask for burner tube brushes , they come in many sizes both metal and nylon and a few brass. Or boiler tube brushes . Both have long handles.

Just tried the moose milk. Worked great! Clean as a whistle.
