Polishing out barrel-bluing? Is there a technique?

On my .45/70 barrel a couple inches back from the 26" muzzle, the finish appears marred like from leaning in a rifle rack for too long, and I'd like to polish it out to its original (medium) shine, if that is possible!!??
 
 
 
I've wondered if gun oil mixed with and extremely ffiiiiiinne abrasive would work?
 
Please , any suggestions?

Oil and #0000 superfine steel wool has always worked for me, I use it all the time when remounting scope rails or prep for touch-up. Their bluing is usually pretty thin tho, so beware, it may require rebluing.

I've noticed that too about their bluing, but I'll try the #0000 and oil!

Tims advice is right on.  Anything else and you are through the blue and you are looking at a whole different ball game. PC

I use Flitz to clean off rust spots and make hte bluing shine.
It is like a fiiine toothpaste.  I think a little finer than 000 steel wool. 
It will remove any and all color case hardneing so beware.   
A little flitz a clean wash cloth (I buy the bulk pack at costco and keep them in the garage for gun stuff)   will clean up most any gun and a little rubbing will not go through the blueing.
If you need to remove the bluing there is a polishing compound called Never Dull a little of the packing and it will cleanly remove any and all bluing and get the metal ready to be de greased and reblued with the cold bluing rub on.

I know you just wanted medium but if a fellow wanted fine then red shop rags will take out the tiny scratches 0000 leaves. If a fellow wanted to keep going after that automotive polishing glaze will buff out the tiny scratched the shop rag left.

I find the opposite is true

the Pretty ones are all show and no go...

the Ugly ones really put out, cause every "Hunt" might be their last!
