3/4" Groups at 500yards w/ Contender
« on: February 14, 2004, 02:40:30 PM »
I would appreciate it if anyone can help me find the name of the gunsmith/shooter who was writen up in Guns and Ammo or American Rifleman a few years back for designing wildcat rebarreled versions of Contender pistols.  According to the article he could consistantly make guns that shot around an inch at 500 yards.  I can't find the article in my archives but it came out at least four or five years ago.  Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
EK

You are talking about Don Bower.  One of the articles is Ultimate Pistol Accuracy, 1 1/2" groups at 1/4 mile.  I can give you a link to the scanned article later today if you want it.

That would be some amazing shooting.  Better than anything I have heard of, even with watching sniper training programs for police and military on t.v.  Is this really possible?

There is no way a person can do this consistantly. Even a one mile per hour wind will drift a bullet half a foot at those ranges. I have shot four inch groups at 350 yds here and there and a few 12 inch groups at about a quarter mile with my 270 win.  There is no way a cross hair could be that fine.  Once in a while I guess it could happen but it is mostly luck .
