Talk to Brownells.  They have been helpful to me in the past.

I have read that to change out a 219 FP, you need some diagrams, lots of patience and a place to holler expletives.....

depending on the model, the difficulty is greater, exponentially.

then there is the issue of sourcing the FPs...  different sub models, used different FPs

good luck

take lots of pictures and keep us in the loop.

I own 4 219s and a 220.....

Never had one, but from the schematic in the link(depending on sub model as nanuk said), it appears the top pin is the firing pin retainer which is similar to an H&R, pin may be splined on one end so it needs to be knocked out from the opposite side of the splines. Numrich shows the 219L firing pin retainer is threaded and removed from the right side. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/154200B.htm They show a firing pin and striker assembly for the 219(*) also which is totally different. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/146300.htm

Good luck,

Tim

Ham7777, I wish you luck with your search.  The 219 are such a sweet little rifle, I hate to see one down for any reason.  I have one in 30-30 at the 'smiths now waiting for a firing pin.  I understand you can break one from dry firing the gun.  Anyway it has been sitting there for some time because they didn't know which pin it needed.  If they had asked instead of waiting, I'd have told them to order all of the pins available and I'd pay for them, just get it going so I can go and shoot it.  This is my first 219 but I have shot a friends and loved it.  He wouldn't sell it to me, but he had this extra frame and a butt stock and a 20" carbine barrel and said I could have that for a very small fee.  But he wanted to get it put together for me so we are waiting on the parts now but my friend said he should have them and will get them to the smith and get it moving.  I'm very anxious to get this rifle in my hands and go shooting!  Hope all goes well with yours.  44 Man

44 Man

Good luck with yours.  At least you guys have access to supplies down there.

I have 4 of these now, 2 x 219 30-30 Swing lever cocking, 1 219B hornet Barrel stud cocking, and 1 219?? hornet that I haven't had time to look too closely at it, as it is buried in junk from a cleanup....  still in shipping box...   and I Have a 220 12ga...

and have been eyeing a 220 28ga.

these are beautiful rifles, and if made today, I'd sell all my other stuff and only have 219's and Handies.

I plan on reaming the 30-30's to AI to be easier on brass.  (1 hornet may go the same way, and one may get reamed to 225Win, or 222Rem (if I can see an option getting around the ejector)

I love my SingleShots.

Nanuk, the one I had my hands on belonged to my buddy Ed and WAS a 30-30AI.  He had not shot it and wanted me to work up some loads for it with H4895.  It was a good shooter and I really fell in love with it.  He wouldn't sell that one and you know the rest of the story.  I did save a couple of brass and found some dies for AI I put away, but haven't cut any chambers yet.  My only 30-30 at this time is my Topper and if I make one an AI, I want to still have a regular 30-30 available.  I'm thinking I'll keep my Topper (and the 219 when I finally get it) standard and watch out for another Handi barrel in AI, or pick up a newer profile barrel to open to AI.  Just my luck 2 barrels in AI just went through the Handi classified but I had my 'gun' money tied up elsewhere!  Ah well, "next time" as they say.  44 Man

Looking for some help on information on changing firing pin on Savage 219 30-30. have tried the Savage fourm but no luck there.  Thanks Tom

The first thing to do, after removing the barrel, is to remove the buttstock, via unscrewing the stock's throughbolt, located inside the deep hole under the buttplate. if the threads are frozen, they might require an overnight app of penetrating oil, applied through the forward part of the action & allowed to flow back into the rearmost area of the tang (where the threads are). I do that via clamping the action in a padded vise with it pointing almost (but not quite) straight "up".

How to proceed would depend upon if your 219 is the earlt striker-fired, or the later internal-hammer action - but generally ensure the action's cocked, then take a good look up/forward, with a good light, from alongside the LH side of the tang area,to see what you're dealing with.

IIRC, mainspring pressure must first be relieved, so the FP can be worked on ( It's been several years since I've done one).

The original Savage 219 had the striker, subsequent models BC and L M-219's were an internal swinging hammer. It is easy to see with the buttstock off. Any gunsmith who cant figure out which it is pretty quickly I would have to question the competency of.
