Poem Johnny
« on: February 23, 2014, 02:10:39 AM »

                                                                          Johnny
Johnny was a soldier who never fought a foreign war
But he wore the uniform here at home where he became a star
From his Southern home He traveled north where ever he was sent
Seemed like misery just followed him everywhere he went
He lost a brother at Vicksburg and another in Alabam
Then Johnny was sent to Gettesburg to give those folks a hand
Things got worse and at times, Johnnys heart would cry
It happened each and every time a friend would fall and die

As time went on Johnny lost a lot of friends along the way
Everywhere he was sent, some folks didn't want him to stay
His uniform no longer new began to show some wear
But he proudly wore that uniform, to each and every affair
Then as the years passed it became more ragged and torn
But Johnny was still very proud of the grey that he had worn

Then one day the news came that Johnny had passed away
And on his headstone beneath the stars and bars it does proudly say
1861 to 1865         JOHNNY REB     CSA

Sums it up in few paragraphs, well done IC.  Tthe reasons i admire those farm boys in Gray are what you mention, they possessed a shared belief, were proud, had dogged determination and were plenty willing to give their lives for their cause, which was to be left alone.

This pic, is of 4 confederate "soldiers" gravesite which is right down the road from me in a tiny church lot, originally designated for irish miners. The boys were returning home from war, in the spring of 65' when their ferry overturned in fast running water flowing down the catawba river. They were literally within miles of home when this occurred and were buried right there near the spot they perished, at the closest church. I've since heard there are actually 8 men buried there but several arn't yet identified by these newly placed markers. I imagine there was just rock or even wood markers for many years , luckily DAR or another similar group has worked hard to not let these gravesites go forgotten.

"In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me.As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,While God is marching on."My family lost loved ones in the Civil War too.
Act the way you would like to be, and soon you will be the way you act.

:) Howdy! That's a great poem that honors our highborn kinsmen. The last civil war veteran is buried about 25 miles from my home. Brigadier General Walter Williams was promoted to this rank by President Eisenhower. The cemetery is near Franklin, TX. I recently found out that I had two gggrandfathers that were civil war veterans. One was a union soldier and the other a confederate soldier. I have pictures of them and their tombstones. Always, Gene
