Getting back into it
« on: June 28, 2013, 05:10:28 AM »
I've been off the cannon forum for a little while and I'm starting to get back into it. I finished putting something together for the 4th of July to shoot besides my mini Coehorn. The tube is 4140 with a .750 bore, blued, in the style of a mountain howitzer. The sled is black walnut, trimmed with brass, in my version of a ship carriage. The hardware was standard grade 5 hex head that was reshaped to square head and nut, then blued to match the barrel. I plan to make another cannon to match the carriage and a wheeled carriage for the howitzer. I was having a hard time finding 10" wheels and I saw a pic of a similar setup from a museum and ran with it.

Nice cannon there, what kind of charge and projectile are you going to shoot out of it?

It has a 1/2 x 1" powder chamber that I fill with 2F black powder. I also have lead .715 550gr balls that I will use a patch with and shoot, although I have only shot the one blank shot as of now. I gotta get it to the range. For now, it makes a nice firecracker for the 4th.
