Shot my 30-40 today
« on: January 31, 2014, 03:49:37 PM »
Temperature got to the mid twenties so it was time to sight in my 30-40 Krag. George did a good job reaming it from my 30-30.
l mounted a Leupold 3x9 VXII and loaded some cases. I also pulled some 308 165gr Superformance that didn't shoot well in the
Rem 700 varmint rifle and loaded them, powder and bullet. They shot well.
Any load suggestions from other 30-40 owners?

180gr.-210ish cast GC at .311-.312 (what ever will fit your fully fire-formed case mouth and chamber) over 14.5-16.0 of IMR4227 for about 1450fps.

For me, the 30-40 is the 30-30 Magnum rather than the 30-06 light.

That lovely long neck calls out from heavy cast bullets and the Lyman 311284 is excellent over 4198. I'm not at home so don't have my hand load data available but will revert when I get back with my two favorite loads cast ans and jacketed.

I like IMR 4350 for jacketed bullets and 2400 for cast bullets. Try 16gr of 2400 with cast bullets weighing 165-180gr. You will be pleased with the comfortability.

Thanks, Dinny

Current loads:

Light - 150 gr. Sierra Gameking with 37.5 gr of Reloader7 for 2600fps and a ballistic efficiency of 32.1% @ 48124 PSI

Medium - 165 gr. Hornady Interlock SP with 35.5 gr. of Reloader7 for 2455fps and a ballistic efficiency of 33.3% @ 47825 PSI

Heavy - 180 gr. Hornady Interlock SP with 33.8 gr. of Reloader7 for 2327fps and a ballistic efficiency of 34.3% @ 47513 PSI  (shot a 6" group at 300 yards with irons)

These are all at my 48K limit and aren't max loads; below I'll put max loads for modern.  I have a soldered underlug on my converted barrel, so I'm keeping the pressures down in the safe range for my 1898 Krag for safety sake.  My intention is to get a good 200 to 220 gr. gas checkable lead bullet mold and clean the copper fouling and change this over to a cast only gun.  I just cannot get the mold I want currently.  With these three loads though currently I feel pretty solid on taking most medium to big game in N. A.  It's a super light rifle and I've put a Williams Guide Receiver Sight (WGRS) on the rear with a Marbles .577 1/16 gold bead on the front.  Makes for a nice powerful carry gun.  ;)

Maximum MODERN 30-30 converted barrel only!  Back off 10% and work up!
Light - 150 gr. Sierra Gameking with 39.5 gr of Reloader7 for 2703fps and a ballistic efficiency of 3% @ 54897 PSI

Medium - 165 gr. Hornady Interlock SP with 37.5 gr. of Reloader7 for 2556fps and a ballistic efficiency of 4.1% @ 54834 PSI

Heavy - 180 gr. Hornady Interlock SP with 35.8 gr. of Reloader7 for 2426fps and a ballistic efficiency of 34.7% @ 54726 PSI
