Walnut Stocks on Handi Rifles
« on: February 04, 2014, 05:42:36 AM »
I just purchased a Gun Stocks Inc. walnut set for my new Handi Rifle.  I would love to see photo's of completed projects using this or other walnut stock set's. Any tips and trick to complete my project would also be appreciated.

I was just looking at their stocks last week. I did some searches looking for finished guns but did not find much. Looking forward to see how your project turns out!!

It will be a few weeks before mine is done depending on how fast the shipping is but I will post pictures when it is done.  I too have had problems finding much through internet searches. I am really hoping I get some photo's and finishing tips posted by members who have used them so I have some idea's when mine arrives.  I ordered the buffalo classic and schnable forend from them.

This is my .45LC carbine.  I wasn't able to use the straight checkered walnut stock that came on it so I replaced the Butt stock with a matching H&R checkered walnut Monte Carlo.

I like that rifle Pete, can I ask why you couldn't use the straight stock?  That is one of my concerns as I have never owned a straight stock, but I sure like the way they look.  Is that a TDC Butt Stock or something you made or had made?  I've been watching a TDC Butt stock for $70 shipped, do you think that is a good price?  I am not sure as I paid $72 for the BC style and schnable forend but neither are checkered or finished yet.

Most folks that need to or prefer to use scopes don't tend to like the drop stocks.  It's hard to get consistent cheek weld when it drops away so fast.  ;)

According to my records I paid $125 for my TDC stock from a member here in the classifieds.

Pete, where did you find a checkered walnut Monti Carlo stock?

The stock came from H&R.  Brian56 gave me the part number to order.  That was a couple of years ago so I don't know if they still have them.

Scott, the lack of cheek weld was the major reason, but, in a tee shirt, it bit with the metal butt plate and a hot and heavy load......yeah, I know, we seldom get to wear tee shirts ::)   If I had thought about it at the time, I would have put the BC straight stock on a Pardner .410 shotgun.

I really like those TDC stocks but they have proven hard to find.  I think I will leave the pallet wood on my 45-70 until I find one of those sets.  I am thinking this new set is going on my '84 topper 158 30-30/20 gauge combo gun which should handle well with the straight stock.  I also ordered the pachmyer old English recoil pad in brown which should compliment the walnut stock well. Any thoughts?

I bought one of the unfinished stocks from Gunstocks Inc. a few years ago and they are pretty well finished where only a little bit of sanding is necessary.   What I didn't like about the stock was the amount of at least to me, was the extra wood around the grip and the exaggerated height of the cheek rest which looked like a table top, and it was way too high to properly line up my eye to the scope, so out came the wood plane.  I believe they make them that way since one size does not fit all!
I planed a lot of that high cheek rest down, probably 1/4" or a little more, and cut down the pistol grip quite a bit and thinned down the grip to try and make it flush with the receiver as best I could.  The stock now fits me perfectly and I can close my eyes and shoulder the rifle, open my eyes and I'm right on target.
It made a really nice comfortable and good looking stock.   The picture doesn't do it justice as the finish is very deep and the wood grain is outstanding.   If you have wood working skills, you will like the Gunstocks stock!

I have had two I believe. I know I refinished one. Think I got second in a trade....

Both are sold. They are nice but like handi factory stocks are fat... ::). If someone was willing to spend the time  they would have a beautiful stock.

That is a nice stock Jim, what did you use for a finish?  I am debating between tru oil and tung oil.

Pure Tung Oil will water spot white until it has had a loonnngggg time to harden up (BTDT, 13 coats hand rubbed in one time on a longrifle), True Oil has hardeners in it and sets up much quicker, and if you dont like it shiny you can soften it up to satin finish with a number of ways by hand.
The old rule of thumb was,'once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and annually after that'. Ask Quick how thats going.......... ;)
BTW, I wont 'wax' a stock as it interferes with rubbing a small bit on once a year.

I like and use both oils!!

I was set on tung for my recient thread. When I opened the can I hadend sealed it properly and it was almost totally hard. Now I need to go on the hunt for more. I like formbys brand. So I used tru oil and it's MUCH faster!

I go back and fourth with gloss and matte... I went gloss this time. Last year when I did those two Sheridan stocks (some may remember) I did one gloss and made one matte by simply soalking 0000 wool in WD 40 after allowing it to harden for about a week. Nice finish on both.

I can send or post another pic if you would like to see. Both stocks side by side both same number of coats of same finish.

I used Tru Oil!   I love that stuff for gunstocks.   I can't remember how many coats, since it was a few years ago, but it's a few.   I hate to get a stock looking too pretty because I use my guns, and they aren't safe queens, so they get bumped and dinged because I use them.  ;D

Thanks for the photos and info guys. I was leaning towards tru oil but thought I would ask. The wood should be here Monday so I will post pics of the project as it progresses. I do have to say I am surprised that more people didn't post pictures I am sure there have to be more walnut stocked handi's out there.

CW I would like to see those pics side by side if you don't mind.

Jimbo47, glad to see you got your GSI stock whittled down to you. The reason the stocks are shipped oversized is simple, so the owner can work it down to their preference. You did it properly , got it to where you can close your eyes, shoulder the rifle, open your eyes and the scope is on target. Good for you. That is what I'm going to do for my 45-70 if I keep the scope on it, been thinking of going to a peep sight. Y'all take care, John.
It's not what you do, but how you do what you do, that counts.
Just keep on keeping on!

Thank you glockmeister for the kind words!
It's a labor of love to take a rifle and turn it into something that is customized to fit you personally.
That's what I love about these rifles, is you can build your own custom rifle without breaking the bank and get the greatest satisfaction by doing it yourself. ;)
