3 rings on a scope

Is any one using 3 rings on there scopes for the heavy recoiling handis ?

Most of my handies wear peeps right now but I have never had a scope move on any handi I own, Includeing the .45-70 with Ruger #1 loads. Which BTW I refuse to shoot ever again. :o

if you use good rings there's no need to use three, even on heavy hitters

Most of my Handis wear steel Burris Zee rings and I've never had any problems.  My first Handi, the 22 inch .45-70, came to me used wearing a Tasco 3-9x50 Golden Antler mounted on what I believe are Weaver Quad Locks.  I shoot the Rem. 405 at close to 2000 fps in that rifle and have never had a problem.  I see no value in adding a third ring.

I used three on a couple contenders. 45/70, 375, and 357 Herrett.  I did have some issues with the 454 when I first re chambered it so I have three ZEE rings on it. No more issues. Not sure it's "needed" but it works. ;)

Had a 454, although it wasn't a handi, and a 500 that we tried multiple brands of rings on until we finally added a third to keep it from creeping, it took 5 or 10 shots and it would move every time

I hate to say this in public, but the 500 isn't worth the powder it takes to blow it to hell.  All it is, in my experience, is bark and bite and zilch ballistics.  I won't wreck my scopes or shoulder for what that stupid round can do.  I can get better performance without the pain from many of my Handis......45-70, .445, .45LC, etc.  To me it's just a junk fad caliber.  I sure as hell wouldn't shoot it in a handgun.

Put a drop of blue or purple Loctite on the bottom ring half before you set the scope.  ;)

Tim's fix looks like a good one. I have in the past set up a rifle with three rings and although I cannot
 remember what caliber it was I do remember it did stop any movement of the scope....<><.... :)

Baby Powder dusted on the bottom ring and top of the scope (before installing the top of the ring ) )just a dusting not a pile) will keep them them in place. An old trick from a retired gunsmith .Plus it makes your scope smell fresh ;D  Another option is use less powder in the case when reloading :o

an extra ring  shirlry  can't hurt
i have done it on several rifles
 i have a 375 ruger with 2x7 luepold
i have a pile of cheap  NC Star rings
managed to get 4 rings  on it with the scope right where i wanted it
scope still shifted from recoil


i have some guns  i did the blue locktight....new trick to me ,,, so far so good

Another thing to look at - Lapping the rings, it provides more surface area for increased friction with the scope tube.

I always put a drop of Loctite or fingernail polish ( if I am out of Loctite) on the bottom rings when I mount a scope, and have never had one move, but I also use Burris Zee rings. THX, Roy
