Bottom line is money,  with smart meters FP%L laid off over 600 people.  Thay also have had some installations that would trip GF breakers.

Our house in town had one of those along with "Smart hours". Saved a little money. The smart meter was just a few cents a month but the smart hours saved used $30-$40 a month. I suspected there was more to it, but I really don't care if someone knows my schedule. It's pretty much public record already.

WE have smart meters here and have for several years. The info in the vid, about 98% of it is pure horse bagels. It meters when you use electricity so they can determine demand. Demand means they can predictably take generators off line at certain times for maintenance. It doesn't have a clue what you cooked on yer electric stove, doesn't have a clue what channel you watched on yer electric TV, doesn't have a clue what website yer computer went to. Our utility company is owned by the taxpayers. My cousin is one of the top dogs in the company and I can assure you he'd be EXTREMELY vocal if there was anything shady about it. It has saved us dollars since implemented. WE no longer have the guys walking the neighborhoods that can't read a meter anyway so they guess at it. It has also let home owners bring fences up to the front of the houses as our meters are put on the rear corners of a house. Our electrical, phone, and cable are run in the back yards while water and sewer are in the street.

That video has been around for quite a while and I have no idea what fantasy land the presenter lives in. As Larry L said: "horse bagels", mostly.

I used to be a meter reader and it's a surprisingly challenging job. Dogs and other "CGI"s (can't get in). Automating meter reading is a good thing for the customer.
