Cabin Fever Cure 45-120
« on: February 08, 2014, 11:35:03 PM »
Putting together a Texas Varmint Rifle:
 32" 45-120 Barrel
 SB2 Receiver
Laminated Thumbhole stock and Forearm

The question is :
Do you think the 325 grain bullet is acceptable for Aramadillos or should I go with the big (700 grain ) Bullets?

George,

Use the Remington 405 SPs, the ones the factory loads at about 1,300 fps.  If you can hang on, you ought to be able to just about double that velocity with your 45-120.  See Ty's load data at ammoguide. :o  IIRC, this load was tested on deer and possum.  Can anybody say "explosive expansion"? ;)

I shot one three times yesterday with my 22lr. I should have know I wasn't using enough gun. I was about to pull the 44 out when he ducked into a hole. Speaking of holes, ya better not miss or the diller will run down the hole you shoot into the ground, never to be seen again.

Thanks, Dinny

George, I am waiting to see a report on how that thing shoots! After getting my A$$ handed to my by the recoil of the .45-70 I figured I didn't even need to try that one. Damned shells won't fit in my press anyway. Are you planning on using black or really trying to jar loose some teeth? I am still looking for the original front sight for you. ( have one more hiding place to check) Was hoping to try the .30-40 tomorrow but it looks unlikely. Well.... maybe next weekend.

Mike.

In the days of yore the only way to get more velo was to stuff in more black powder, thus the 45/90 and 120, and the British BP Express Cartridges. Since the advent of smokeless with its oft quoted '3X the energy' the 45/70 can easily surpass even those, but with a sharper, quicker felt recoil. It turns the old warhorse into feeling (on both ends) like a much larger and more intense cartridge.
But it is still kinda stubby looking compared to those sexy, long cigar 45/120's, and they are stunning stuck in a shell carrier/bandolier.

I like BB's direction, the Black Powder Express. Use some paper patched 300 - 325 grain bullets at silly velocity. Not just hit 'em hard but hit 'em hard from way off!
