First time to shoot the Huntsman.
« on: July 17, 2004, 07:26:24 AM »
Finally got to the range today with my Huntsman. I shot 5 times w/ 295gr. Powerbelts over 90 gr. 777. I mounted the 4x32 Bushnell Sharpshooter ($25 ordered thru Wal-Mart) and the first shot went way high completely missed the target, backstop and went into the hill. Adjusted the scope and by the 5th shot was hitiing 2" low at 35 yds. Figured I'd leave it at that until I clean it and return to try it at 80 -100 yds. I may bring some 100 to 110 gr. loads with me then too. My friend who was shooting with me was so impressed with the scope that he wants to purchase my spare. I'm pretty impressed with it too. Now to see if it holds up to 100 shots or so. If so then I have gotten my $25 worth. I personally feel it will do even better than that.
This is my first experience ever shooting a muzzy and I really enjoyed it. Makin' Smoke :mrgreen:..........alright by me!
I have arranged to be off three days during muzzy season here in OK, Mon., Tue., and Wed., after opening weekend. Mr. Whitetail is in for a big surprise.

lik2hunt;
welcome to the world of muzzleloading!
anything over your starting load of 90gr of powder, will probably just be a wast of powder.
the huntsman's 24inch barrel is just not long enough to burn much more powder than that.
mine is most accurate at about 85gr. if you start with a light charge (say 80gr.) and work up then i think you will find that (sweet spot) for accuracy somewhere between 80-100 grains. they will vary from gun to gun in what they like.

one thing that you will probably notice early on is that the point of impact will change quit a bit from a clean barrel to a fouled one
one thing i do when sighting in is to run a wet patch then a dry patch down between shots.....that way im zeroed to a clean barrel.

mine loves hornady 300grain xtp w/ triditions .45/.50 sabots and 85gr. loose pyrodex.....it will cloverleaf one hole with 3 rounds at 50yrds.....if i do my part.

keep us posted
