hornady 140 ftx in 357 maxi
« on: February 15, 2014, 02:24:05 PM »
I just got my maxi brass (big thank you to badnews bob)  for my soon to own first maxi ammo.  My buddy has a box of hornady 140 ftx if I want them.      Has anyone used them on deer?  Any input is apprecated
Thank you all

At maxi capable velocities I DO NOT recommend them!!

The ONLY way I would try it would be to duplicate 8'' revolver ballistics from a 140g bullet in a 357 magnum.

Most FTX handgun bullets are on the fragile side. The 140 FTX could see 2400+ velocities, FAR above recommended usages.

Its fine for varmint or target and shot real good for me in a couple loadings.

I know of someone who uses that bullet every year for IN deer hunting. He doesn't load them very fast to get the results he desires and has been very successful. 1800fps is plenty fast enough IMHO.

Thanks, Dinny

I'll go along with CW.  I wouldn't hunt anything but varmints with them in any caliber.  The FTXs are just too fragile.  I've had them shed their jackets in a single gallon water jug.  As a side note, I've found with all three of my maxis that I get my best performance pushing the bullet fast.  +Ps in the .38s for example and over 2000 fps in Maxi mode.

I've shot the LE factory 140gr ammo in my 357 Mag Handi before I maxied it, even then they run just over 1800 fps, the Hornady 8th list the maximum muzzle velocity for the 140gr FTX bullet as 1600fps.

When using max brass, I rarely use a bullet that is smaller than 180gr, I normally load 180gr LHC WFNGC LBT style bullets in mine. If using jackets I like the Hornady 180gr XTPs.

If they are cheap enuff or free even, I sure wouldn't turn them down, But I would load them in Magnum brass and keep them at mag speeds.

I bet at max speeds they would blow up like a V Max.  That would be a good coyote round me thinks.
