My rattle can camo shotgun job
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:04:22 PM »
I posted prior to the crash about camo'ing my old 20 gauge.
Just thought I'd post a couple pics.

Maybe you should patent that pattern - it blends in better than factory camo jobs!

Looks really good.

Very well done.  Are you going to do a satin clear coat to protect the colors?

really nice.
i wish (in a way) i'd put a
shake-shake job on the last one
i got instead of making everything
look nicey-nice. now i'm half skeered
of scratching up all my nice work.
the animals could care less as long
as there's no reflective surfaces to
alert them. my 10 has the old factory ugly
h&r green-with-black-dots, and it works
as good as any.

To answer a few questions?
Other than probably putting a Tru-Glo front site on it's done.  ;)
Got the pattern idea off okshooters a few years back so no patent.  ;D

Get a scrath? Don't care. Wear off? I'll spray a lil more on.
It's going to get used.
I posted a pic pre site crash that showed the light rusting.  :-\
That's the main reason I painted it.  :)

I have had the hankering to paint up a gun for some time. We used to do it to our duck guns every year and aft season strip it off with acetone. But those where "rough" Remington 870 and Winny M12 guns that didn't have much blue and there stocks where more dented than smooth.

I bought a Ruger American Rinfire and half a doz cans of paint. (Couldn't decide if I wanted it grey or tan or green or even camo.... I ended up spraying it tan. Did not like it at all. Paint never seed to dry and VERY easily came off.
(I'm no rookie with this stuff. I abraded the stock and cleaned with paint thinner. I was worried acetone might be too strong for the plastic Ruger stock. )

SO I stripped it and that's how it remains.

I have done a couple dozen stocks with rustolium bed liner paint. That works GREAT!!  I was at a shoot one time and the Sargent of one of the opposing teams called in a favor. I did his entire squads 870 stocks!! They looks and worked great! I saw then about five years later and they still looked real good. That police duty, these guys are ROUGH on stuff!!!

I want to do a camo job. Just need to have everything aligned I guess.

I really do like the long leaf pine effect!!!

This old shotgun will spend it's time either in the field or in my shop.
I've used it a couple time to chase off stray critters.
It patterns nicely so that is why I took the time to paint it.
Worst case scenario is I find something else I like better for turkey.
In which case it'll still be used for critters.

I've got a couple other ideas for camo patterns.
Just haven't had time to test them.
I've got a 12 guage mod that might get the treatment this summer time.
It will involve more of a 3D effect or layering of elements.

I like the paint job on the rifle in the centerfire section using the web pattern. http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/hr-centerfire-rifles/snow-day-paint-job/

I like it. So if you have a synthetic stock, do you need to primer the whole stock before applying a color?

Depends on the color.  If you use plastic paints, and don't mind the back ground being dark, you can paint right on it.  If you want to put a light color on a black stock, a white primer base would be smart.  If you are doing a camo type or don't mind a couple coats, you can skip it.  You can use a plastic primer also, then use regular paint on top.  If you are doing a camo, use black as the base, then you are already 1/2 to 1/3 of the way done.  ;)

I've seen a few black synthetic stocks that the owner just did a camo pattern right over it. I thought they looked pretty good with the black background.
