Hopkins and Allen Hawken 50 Cal rifle question.

How much is a Hopkins and Allen 50Cal Hawken rifle worth.  More importantly, is the quality any good, compared to the Lyman and TC versions?

I really wanted an underhammer and was looking to make one even.  The H&A from what I have found are pretty decent quality.  I do have a place where you can buy the locks and the lock  itself is about $150.  A barrel runs about $125 for a Green Mountain or $200 for a Colerain.  I found the cheapest stocks set up for this style rifle in partially finished form for $120.  So if you really want one, you will be spending this plus some for sights, barrel tenons, ramrod hangers etc.  All said about the cheapest I could make one was $800 or if I made my own stock from scratch, about $600.  If you can get one for a decent price, $300 would be a good average depending on the bore quality and overall shape.  I'm not a shop owner, but had looked for some time into this myself.

i believe the original poster was askin' about a Hawken type rifle similar to t/c's & lyman's.

I know nothin' about the specific model you have but back in the day Numrich Arms made/sold a lot of Hopkins & Allen guns & parts. the combination of quality & price made them a pretty good bang for the buck.

bubba.50 - Thanks, I was asking about a Hawkens type sidelock percussion rifle made by Hopkins & Allen.  Not an underhammer style.  If you remember, what do you think they're worth?

I just got to handle a H&A Hawken rifle lately, so I guess I also have a chance to answer my own question.  FWIW, I wasn't too impressed with the overall quality.  I do have to say the balance was excellent, probably because the rifle was so light.  The trigger was kinda "cheap", it was too thin for my tastes, the lock seem to be of decent quality.   The gun I saw was about 35-40 years old, so I guess you have to take that into consideration.

I'm certainly going to call them, albeit most of those models of CVA haven't been produced for at least 4 or 5 years.  They dropped traditionals a while ago, so my hopes are slim.  If they are still in business and have items for these prices, I'll be visiting them a TON.  lol

tacklebury - When I saw the prices, I just figured the company just didn't exist anymore.  If you happen to verify they do exist, let me know.  I'm in the same boat as you, if they still sell at these prices, I can see my charge card over heating. ;D
