Aging quickly
« on: February 23, 2004, 06:12:18 AM »
Having read the latest T&PC, I can say that Tom's article has me thinking. I'm 35 years young in mentality and 35 years old as far as my body condition is concerned. Kind of feel like I'm slowing down a bit and I'd like to think I'm doing things smarter instead of faster. I'd love to be 18 again, and know what I know today but that just isn't going to happen.
One thing I think I'm dealing with well before my time is artheritus (sp?) My hands ache to a point of not being able to grip a hatchet and pound stakes on some days. It's very frustrating. What do you folks with artheritus do to combat it?

Bill,I have a bottle of Ibuprofen.It goes everywhere with me.When things start hurting,while trapping or even before.Its Ibu time.
 Keeping the hands covered at all times ,with gloves or gauntlets also helps.
 I remember when I was 35 ,started playing ball again after a 14 year layoff.Finally retired when I was 49,but after getting glasses Iplayed last year.Hit 600 again so I knew the glasses really helped me see the ball,just wish I could run like I could in my 30s.
Bill talk to your doc about the arthritis,he may be able to steer you onto something better.

MALLARD,
 Welcome to the old mans club, this is something that most of us suffer as time sneaks up on us, i'm70 years old and hace had a lot pain in all my joints since i was about 40, the only thing i have found is to try and stay
warm and take a lot ibu, i've had it so bad that tears would come to my eyes when i would break open a long spring #3 trap, so i know what you are going through, best wishes and take care of your self.  Joe

Mallard;
  Hate to tell you but it doesn't get easier as time goes on -- BUT -- you will learn to cope with it.   I fight with it daily and the ibuprofen helps and I also take glucosamine and a prescription drug for it.  Over the past year, I have learned how to somewhat "ignore" the stiffness and pain in the joints.   I can't  "squat down" while making a set now so I had to adjust to getting on my knees to make a set, and then have to hurry or I find it hard to stand back up.  I guess it is just part of life that some of us have to deal with.  Some folks never seem to get it and some become really disabled by it.  My wife has almost totally lost the use of one thumb and two fingers on one hand but she manages to do whatever she wants to do.  If I were you, I think I would take Bog's advice and see a doctor.

Welcome to the club. As the saying goes, "old age ain't for sissies". I have it in the knees. I can't walk far enough to go hunting anymore. So I took up silhouette shooting. Take Glucosamine. It take a while to work (months) but it helps. Ibuprophin takes care of pain.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer with his buddies for a lifetime.

This isn't a beer gut!!  Its a feul tank for a sex machine!!

When you're 20 and you get tired from climing up the side of a mountain you think "I'm tired" and sit down to rest. A few minutes later you finish the climb.

When you're 40 and do the same thing you think "I must be getting old". But you do notice that you rested 3-4 times going up the same mountain.

But you console yourself by saying "I'm not the man I once was, but I'm the man I was ONCE"! (not talking about mtn climbing)

Thanks for the advice. Now if I could somehow get away from the need to eat prunes  :shock: I'd be getting somewhere, but that's a whole different topic. lol

The young wolf and the old wolf sat atop the hill looking down at a heard of sheep. The young wolf said "Hey dad, lets run down and eat one". The old wolf replied " No son......lets walk down and eat them all"

All this old talk is making me tired :( .  Dang!

Little Joe you want to watch that DMSO.  Basically it is a very good detergent and allows "things" to disolve through the skin.  The problem is it dosen't discriminate between good "things" and bad "things".

As for pain relief, the best I've ever found were Bob Cats in the trap...big mean Tomcats are the best.  A couple of them and nothing hurts much the rest of the day. :wink:

TrappnJoe;
  The thing with the DMSO is I HATE the taste of it  :lol:   First learned of it years ago when I was in my teens and working for a fellow who owned race horses.  Sure works good but the minute it touches my skin I taste it and it DON'T TASTE GOOD. :wink:    Don't know that I would recommend it to anyone since I don't really know what is in it or what effects it has on the brain. :twisted:  what? huh? where? oops!  did you see the size of that chicken? :)
