Brokenwing, Practise skinning on the possums!
That there is something they are good for.  Learn to make boards to stretch the hide on. Don't bother trying to sell them as they are worthless. Get your skinning and fur handling stuff together.
Learn to sharpen your knives on a stone and then a steel.
Practise your shooting, and learn to operate your rifle blindfolded.
Spend time out in the woods,  build a fire, sit out there at night and listen to your hound work the brush.  And it will come.

Wing, there is a market for possum.Check with your local buyer. When I was trapping in Missouri 2 years ago,the local buyer was paying a buck a pop--on the carcass.
Those from last years Mississipi trip went to NAFA--some of those brought.  $2.00. Check around there are markets for them.

Bottm line.....if you catch one skin it and get what you can out of it. If its not worth the effort of putting up, you should still dispatch it and know you've still done more good than if you were to let it go. These critters are evil demon number one when it comes to duck nests, grouse nests, turkey nests......you get the picture.

Wing, foothold traps are also banned in NJ.I believe snares and bodygrippers are the tools you can use.
It would be in your best interest to take a good look at your trapping regulations, they should spell out what you can and cannot use.

i couldnt tell you how many of them stupid grinners ive caught this year,20 coons, and my first fox and bobcat,i probably caught twice that many of grinners,i was gonna sell them,i probably sold 15 of em,they are really good for practicing your skinning, fleshing and stretching, thats what i like about them,if it wasnt for them grinners i would have ruined almost all of my furs, but i didnt, thanks to them sorry,no good, turkey snatchin, trash can knockovers, back porch garbage eatin son of a gun grinners,i actually made some money my first year,oh and groundhogs are also useful for practcin, because with groundhog and grinners,if you mess up,the only thing you lose is a .22 bullet, and the use of one of ur traps for a night
Well you get down the fiddle and you get down the bow, kick off ur shoes and you throw em on the floor, dance in the kitchen til' the mornin' light,Louisiana Saturday Night
