Question re 17 hmr
« on: March 07, 2004, 01:09:45 AM »
Does TC make the 17 hmr in a 10" bbl?
I am contemplating getting one of those bbls and like the 10 over the 14-if they make them.  What luck are some of you having with them (in whatever length you have).
I just came into another ler scope and "caint have it sittin around wit out no bbl on it can I?"

You might want to give T/C a call or get in touch with other barrel makers. I did not see a 10 inch barrel in 17 HRM on Thompson Centers site.  http://www.tcarms.com/contpistol/caliber.html

About a year ago,I got an 11" 17hmr in stainless from Bullberry and a buddy got a 14"T/C factory barrel. We did ammo testing and chrono'ed them together. They both liked the Hornaday offering----since have tried CCI also---close in accuracy to Hdy. Accuracy in both barrels is excellent. The 14' barrel chrono'ed at 2480 and my 11" got 2445 with the Hornaday ammo. These results are close enough to be equal in the field as far as I am concerned. As to accuracy, depending on use( hunting or blasting paper) do your tests on a VERY still day, or you may not see any differences.  pg

I shoot a 22" NEF Sportster and S-14 Contender in 17HMR.  My Sportster w/ Hornady ammo chrono's right at factory spec, the 14" was 2475fps...as you say, not much difference.  Accuracy is great in both witha slight edge to the Contender.  Could be the most accurate factory barrel I've ever had at 100yd, on a calm day.  Hornady shoots so good I never bothered to try another brand.  The Crows around here don't care much for it.  Fred at Bulberry has a good barrel length/velocity comparison on his website.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

T/C only makes the 14" as a standard item.  Per Bullberry there is not much velocity loss going to a 10".  I bought the 14 and have gotten used to it, even though I have always prefered the 10"ers.  I have a Hornet 10" so the 14" HMR gives me another option.

Last weekend I shot ten shots into a 3/4" orange dot at 100yds with the Hornady ammo.  I keep thinking about selling this barrel but cannot make myself sell a barrel that shoots this good.  I think a 10"er would be good to though.  My Hornet barrel shoots as good as my 17, so the 10"ers are capable.
