Questions @ a Contender I put on layaway.
« on: March 01, 2004, 02:27:05 AM »
Hey Gang,

I'm an Encore man but was in the local gun shop the other day and something caught my eye.  Contender w/ a 7X30 Waters barrel.  It has a 2X Simmons scope with Weaver base and off-brand rings.  The price on the tag was $499 but the owner offered it for $450.  I put a deposit on it and its mine for the time being.

This Contender has the cougar head on it with a scrolled frame around it and T/C in the upper corner.  Appears to be easy-open as it opened pretty easily.  I believe the serial number was in the 400,000s.  Any idea on manufacture time?  Is this a good one to get?

Also, I've read some recent posts here discussing pricing on the used Contenders.  While the scope, base, and rings aren't worth much did I pay a little too much for this gun?  It is in pristine condition - barrel, frame, and wood.  The only marks on the wood that I could find were near the grip cap.

My plan is to pick up a .22LR barrel ASAP.  I already have a .308 Encore pistol barrel so I'm not sure how much use the 7X30 will get but I've heard an awful lot of good things about it - maybe have to give it a try.

Thanks,
