If I remember correctly this was mentioned on a thread on the old site. Being as it shares the same bore with the .30-30 (308) and is rimmed for realiability in a single shot I think this would make an interesting conversion to a .30-30 barrel if the machining could be found. Any thoughts on this?

If I remember, the logic was it made more sense to convert from 30-30 to .308 Bm which is the stronger .444 brass necked to .308. Cases formed and loaded using .308 dies & a .444 size die.

Airsporter, that cartridge is also known as the 309 JDJ, also known as the 308/444. One fellow tried it, and it seems it did not solve his extraction problems 100%. It is very likely that either the 30-40 or the 303 British (using 308 diameter sizing and balls of course) would be the better answer. I'm not yet convinced that any other alternative to the 308 is greatly superior in these guns.

If you are worried about extractions why not take a 308 barrel and cut a rim, change the ejector so you can have a 307 win. Personally I like the idea of the 30-40 krag. Outfitted with the BC stock/forarm it would look good setting next to a Buffalo Classic. Just my 2 cents

I have read elsewhere that it is a popular conversion. Just run the 30-40 reamer into the 30-30. Haven't tried it but it sounds like fun.

Jph45,Good Reply! :grin: Pshaw, Still factory loaded,Dies are still common,as is brass.Less aggravation than a wildcat all the way 'round' :wink: If you need 'more' performance ? you can go w/t Ackley 40 degree version and be right up there w/t the "Big Boys"

Doc, where you been hiding. Good to see ya. I agree, if I had a .30-30 and needed more out of it, the 40 degree AI sounds like the way to go. Could still shoot factory fodder in it, too. :wink:

.308 I think Doc's mention of Jph45's post he might be talking about the 40 degree AI on the 30/40 not the 30/30 AI. Can't be sure though.

pshaw, Might've been, not sure here either. :? Anyhow the .308 seems like the simplest way to go, unless you have an older receiver they won't put a .308 barrel on. In that case the .30-30 is your only choice in .308 diameter. Bumping it up to the 40 degree Ackley version should be a hand reamer project, and get velocities close to the Krag, to boot. :?
