The range limitations of the .45-70 are vested in the shooter.......not the rifle.

The old timers used 45-70s and black powder to kill Buffalo at very long distances. I was shooting my rolling block at 500 yards today with Laser Cast bullets and Trail Boss powder. Managed to punish the target...grin!

I don't know where one would find a falling block for it....other than a custom gun .....but I was thinking that the .348 Winchester would be worth a look.

Nevadadan - did you ever decide on a rifle? If so, what was it?

I have not decided for certain yet, but when I have the money saved I will be calling Fenris Wolf Arms to find out about their pricing then depending on what I find there the EABCO 97D is next in line.  As for caliber I am almost decided on the 30-40 Krag (Ackley Improved would be nice but EABCO doesn't offer that).  My vehicle keeps breaking down along with other unexpected expenses so the saving account isn't growing as quickly as I had hoped.

Great choice!

I see the following on the EABCO website http://www.eabco.com/store/reloading-supplies/custom-30-40-ackley-improved-reloading-dies/

where it states
Quote
...dies for the 30-40 Ackley Improved cartridge that is chambered in the Model 97D rifle...
so it may be possible...

I saw that and will check with them when it comes to ordering, but here http://www.eabco.com/reload03.html it says "* For Reference Only - We Do Not Build 97D Rifles nor                 Contender Barrels in 30-40 AI! "

I do not want ot argue with you, But I have three 45-70 rifles now and had another.
The 1884 Cadet was an all range gun, just flip up the sights to the range and send a 405 grain hunk of lead there.
With my No3 carbine it is hard ot hit things past 100 yards wiht the sights that are mounted on it.  Kind of like shooting a stock 10/22 past 100 yards. (same sights)

My .45-70 is a 22 inch Handi scoped with a 3-9X50 sighted at 200 with the 405 Remington at 1950 fps.  It's 23 inches low at 300 and shoots MOA all the way there.  The way I use it, I can't ask for more.

I'm a fan of the ol' reliable .06 as an all around cartridge. Choose the right bullet and it'll do the job. Now, by requiring a rimmed cartridge, I'd suggest the 7'62 by 54 rimmed Russian cartridge. You're going to be reloading for it and can choose from a good range of bullets. It's about a hundred years old like the .06 and has served in some of the roughest conditions on planet Earth in Siberia against big bears and bigger tigers.   ;)

The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants," Thomas Jefferson

Now if it must be a rimmed round and good for most all game in the USA then think about 7x30 water or a 7x57 Rimmed both rounds when placed in the kill zone will take care of about all game found in the USA.
We have gone over the one gun subject many times with a ton of suggestions but in the end it is up to each one of us to decide what is best for us and what we will be hunting. If you read the book Horns of a hunter you will find that he killed around 1200 Elephants with a 7x57 Mouser, lot of Bullet weights to choose from in the 284 diameter bullet.
Just my thoughts but I am sure yours will be different.
