Two weeks of warm and dry has lifted my spirits tremendously, allowed me to get a lot of work done and generally made me feel better.  Now today at 32 degrees snow and rain mix, I'm gonna spend the day in the saloon and grump...but I'm still buyin'

It seems I'm now in the market for a good mule!  :-D

The coffee sound good to me. I think I will have a cup.  We got some of that snow and rain mix also.  I noticed we had some patches of snow when I was fixing the marshall a cup of coffee. It was raining when I went to bed last night.

Cup of tha black fer me too. It is good to cozy up in a warm place. We, of course, aint blessed/cursed with any white stuff but it is pretty cold and humid. I'm lookin fer a warmer spot, looks like it aint in yer neck of tha woods though.
Fer as tha mule is concerned, tha last I heard we was tryin ta get ol Holiday to shoo him towards Hamps place. Since I aint heard frum either one of them scondrels we have some options.
1) Holiday took an kept tha mule.
2) Holiday shooed him in tha right direction but he aint made it.
3) Tha mule made it but Hamp is keepin it.
4) Tha mule an hamp got waylaid by tha boys as he was tryin to make
good an EXcape frum Dripping Springs.
I'm takin a pole and I'm votin #4.

Holiday slowly makes his way up the wet and snow covered street, his horse's head hanging low and the reins held slack in his hands. Behind him trails the most broken down, sorry lookin' mule to have ever entered the Heart of Dixie. Easing up to the hitching post, Our Hero slides out of the saddle and flips his reins a turn around the post. Turning to the broken down, half bald mule, he takes the halter off its head and slaps it on the rump, sending it meandering on up the street in a northerly direction. Standing for a minute and watching, just to be sure the silly thing didn't follow him home AGAIN, he finally turns and steps into the Saloon. He makes his way to the bar and finally says, "Jugs, set me up let everybody have another swallow of what they been drinkin. Ladies and Gents, and William, I sure am proud to be back in the wonderful state of Alabam!! Just spent the last twelve hours dragin' a trailer throught the snow and sleet up Nashville way and back. And what did I find on my way back into town? That same silly mule!! Butler, do ya ever feed that thang? Dang, its followed me home the last three trips to Nashville!!"

Mornin Ya'll, I am sure glad yesterday is history, started out glum and went downhill rapidly enough that it would have been a snow skier's dream.
One of my ol' beef cows was down,  none of her symptoms were matching for the maladies common to being a fresh cow, or late winter season but treated her for them anyway, cause the treatments for most is just large doses of specific vitimans and minerals that would be good for her anyway.  In being around her for an extended period of time, figured out that she was in heat.  Alright, now I at least have an idea of what's happened.  The vet came and gave her more Vitamans and minerals, glucose and a steroid for inflamation and checks for obvious problems and leaves instructions to get her up.  In getting her up I found the problem, during the riding she's broken a leg.  With the new political knee-jerk reaction to mad cow, she's no longer marketable for any purpose except dead as dog food and that cost me $30 to have'em come get her.
I guess the worst part is that she was one of the ones that was my "buddy", liked to visit, be scratched and generally be in the vicinity of people.  If your famaliar with working with cattle, you know one or two like that is a blessing when it comes to handling the ones less social.
While I don't consider it to be a silver lining, there was one little ray of sunshine.  Since it is my dream to hunt the American plains with my Sharps, I got to test my hunting load, I think it will be adequate.  Between the eyes, through the neck, major artery in the chest, one lung and the rumen.  I quit looking after that, just too messy to deal with and over 5' (that's FEET) of penetration is probably going to be enough anyway.
So, Holiday, you should have brought that dumb ol' mule on up to Kaintuck, we'd a had fresh ribeye and I coulda sent ya home with fresh beef.  I guess the barbeque is gonna be at my house and ya'll all's invited.
So, Juggs, how's about fortifin ma coffee this mornin.
Today's another day. Thanks, Lord.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Butler.  Don't have enough acres to run cows here, but do have a bunch of Boer-cross goats.  Hard not to get attached to critters, and always difficult when you have to put one down.  My biggest problem lately has been coyotes.  Lost two new kids before I realized my guard donkey was falling down on the job.  Now have to pen up the whole herd every evening.

I thank ya'll for you're condolences.  It's life on a farm.  Capn' your a better man than I!!  My wife decided that she was gonna get into the goat business and bought one buck, three nannies and three kids.  I thought that sounded like a doable number. Little did I know! Two of the kids were does.  In the next two years, I learned a valuable lesson, "I am not a goat person".  With only a few sales of individual animals, after two years I had an 8x20 Cattle trailer FULL of the stinkin things.  Decent profit, but I found that I did not have the patience to put up with them.  Good thing they were her's instead of mine, or all profits would have gone across the grill instead of the pocket!!

Butler,

Took some 50-60 lb kids to auction a couple of weeks ago and they brought $1.38 - $1.40 lb.  Best I'd ever done previously was $0.99 lb.  Think most meat goats from around here end up in the California market.

Capn' the rate around here was about a buck a plund for the 50-60 *'ers, you done good.
Will, they make great pets if'n you can keep'em from peein' on their beards or if ya get a little girlie goat.  They like a little attention, then go their own way.  I kinda like that part about'em.
Capn', I forgot to ask, is mules any good fer 'cyotes?

Butler,

Don't know about mules - aren't many around here.  Mostly see donkeys or Great Pyranees guard dogs.  If it's a donkey, gotta have only one, so the donkey can only "socialize" with the goats and become protective.  Two or more donkeys, and they go off together and forget all about the goats.  Can't really blame my donkey, Belle, for my two lost kids.  Had 4 or 5 nannies that dominoed about the same time in various spots in the 22 acre pasture, and Belle couldn't be everywhere at once.  Convinced the 'yotes (at least two) grabbed the pair of new-born kids and took them outside the pasture before eating.  Never found a hair, blood, or anything.

Regarding making pets out of your goats - don't do it with a billy.  Made that mistake and had to get rid of my first one after he decided he was boss and knocked me on my rear end a couple of times (both times I had my back turned and wasn't expecting it).  He weighed 175 lbs and definitely rattled my teeth.

Ok,

I've been accused of being mule headed and stubborn as an
Army mule, I own a mule ear twice barreled shotgun, I've hunted mule deer, I've used 20 Mule Team Borax, I remember listening to "Mule Train" sung by Frankie Laine (see lyrics below)

MULE TRAIN.

MULE TRAIN, MULE TRAIN
CLIPETTY CLOPPING OVER HILL AND PLAIN
SEEMS AS HOW THEY’LL NEVER STOP
CLIPETTY CLOP CLIPETTY CLOP
CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY
CLIPETTY CLOPPING ALONG

THERE’S A PLUG OF CHAW TOBACCY
FOR A RANCHER IN COROLLA
A GUITAR FOR A COWBOY WAY OUT IN ARIZONA
A DRESS OF CALICO FOR A PRETTY NAVAHO
GET ALONG MULE GET ALONG

MULE TRAIN, MULE TRAIN
CLIPETTY CLOPPING ON THE MOUNTAIN CHAIN
SEEMS AS HOW THEY’LL NEVER STOP
CLIPETTY CLOP CLIPETTY CLOP
CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY
CLIPETTY CLOPPING ALONG

THERE’S SOME COTTON THREAD AND NEEDLE
FOR THE FOLKS WHO’S WAY OUT YONDER
A SHOVEL FOR A MINER WHO LEFT HIS HOME TO WANDER
SOME RHEUMATISM PILLS FOR THE SETTLERS IN THE HILLS
GET ALONG MULE GET ALONG

MULE TRAIN, MULE TRAIN
CLIPETTY CLOPPING THROUGH THE WIND AND RAIN
THEY’LL KEEP GOING TILL THEY DROP
CLIPETTY CLOP CLIPETTY CLOP
CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY CLIPETTY
CLIPETTY CLOPPING ALONG

THERE’S A LETTER FULL OF SADNESS
AND IT’S BLACK AROUND THE BORDER
A PAIR OF BOOTS FOR SOMEONE
WHO HAD THEM MADE TO ORDER
A BIBLE IN THE PACK FOR THE REVEREND MISTER BLACK

BUT, I've NEVER eaten mule meat....yet, but I do collect recipes and such.

Christmas Dinner Menu
Camp Desolation, 1848
Recorded by Thomas E. Breckenridge, member of Colonel John Fremonts 4th expedition west.
Soup: Fried Mule Mule Chops Boiled Mule Stewed Mule
Boiled Mule Scrambled Mule Shirred Mule French Fried Mule Minced Mule
 Damned Mule Mule on Toast
(without toast) Short ribs of Mule with Apple Sauce (without Apple Sauce)
Beverages: Snow Snow Water Water

"It really makes no difference how our meat was cooked. It was still the same ould mule".

In tryin' to make my trips to asia more pleasurable and less memorable, I dined with the natives on many occasions and consumed many things that will never pass my lips again, but I don't think mule was one of them, I guess they had already eaten all of them, cause I never saw one there.

Was it "Tales of Wells Fargo" that was sponsored by 20 Mule Team Borax? Back in the late 50's maybe early 60's?

Will, I seen a advertizn fer a new barge'n business on the Red River just north of Nashville, if that be a mule powered barge, it just might be we autta hold of on queryin' the Capn' too spryly.
Justa thought

Might have been, but the one I remember was "Death Valley Days".
