dumb idea or not?

i have a 45/410 14'' i am thinking about taking off vent rib and installing scope mounts to shoot hot 45ammo for deer and hogs, but at the same time could just screw in choke for 410. is the installing scope base a good idea? should the 45be accurate enough to bother? should i just continue to use 44 barrel and forget it. thanks in advance for input

If you already have a 44 barrel you really wont gain much by loading hot 45 loads over a good hot 44 load. With the long jump you'll get in the 45/410 barrel accuracy typically suffers.  KN

First off, I own 3 of the 45/410 barrels, in 10, 14 & 16inches.  To date, I've not found a 45Colt load that will consitantly stay on a nine in plate @ 100 yards.  The throat is too long.  So I would suggest that you define your shot that you plan and see if you will get the accuracy that you can live with.  That is probably why I bought a 10inch straight 45Colt barrel.  I'm also looking at using 410 brass shotshells for loading 250-300 gr. bullets in and see if that will help the accuracy of the 45/410 barrels, but have not done so as of yet.  

I've also heard that B-Square offers a scope mount that will mount to the rib, so no need to remove it.

Les, I have a 10" 45/410.  Mine is the version w/o rib, but has the regular adjustable sights.  I took'm off and put on scope.  Granted, I didn't try many different 45 loads, but accuracy was not enough for the scope to be any advantage, so I quickly switched it back to the open sights.
BTW Les, I'm the sucker you pawned that ol' 375Win barrel off on and I still thank you every time I shoot it. THANKS, GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  :grin:

Great idea Doc. Never thought of using brass 410 cases. Had considered using 454 brass to see if it would make any difference.

Years ago, I read an article that described how to make shot shells for a 444 Marlin using regular 444 brass.  The guy loaded it just like a 410 shotshell with the wads, pellet cups and a wad at the very end like the old shotshells and roll crimped over the wad.

I wonder if the 444 Marlin case could be used for your 45?  The 444 Marlin case is a tapered case and it might be the right size at the base.

I have a 45/410 barrel and I have never played with it at all.  It is so ugly that I can only look at it with one eye at a time.  I will pull it our and see how a 444 Marlin case fits in it.  I don't have access to a 410 shot shell for comparison.

Nahhh!!!
Although, it could be made to work.  The 45 Colt case is .0102" larger than the 444 case and the Marlin Rim is a smidge larger and a smidge thicker.

If one only wanted a few cases for this purpose, you could make them fit.

I don't know if you can still find brass 410 cases anymore.
