How many deer can you take in your state?
« on: September 22, 2021, 04:32:55 PM »
Of course I'm talking how many are theoretically legal to take.

Here in Alabama the number is near astronomical. Bow season begin October 15 each year and runs thru the end of gun season. Gun season starts the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs thru January 31 in most of the state but I think in part of south Bama it runs thru February 15.

On each and every one of those days you can legally take two deer per day. Both can be does or one can be a buck. You cannot legally take two bucks per day and can only take 3 bucks per season I believe.

Used to be for most of my life you could take one buck per day and doe hunting was rare and limited mostly to bow hunting and WMA hunts. Now it's kinda open season on does and you can kill truck loads of them.

Now I dunno anyone who has ever taken all that is legal to take and doubt anyone ever has but we do have folks here who are serious about it and in country with plenty of deer who have killed many hundreds of deer in their life times and that's without crop damage permits but just in regular hunting seasons.

I think the most I ever took in one year was 5 all bucks if I recall correctly during those days when it was one buck a day.

So how many deer can you legally take during your hunting season?

just about the opposite here.  You can buy two tags for the entire year. That includes bow rifle and muzzleloading seasons. The tags are good in all seasons. You can shoot a buck with at least 3 points on one side with one tag and four points on one side with the other. Your only other option is a single tag that allows you to shoot any buck. Doe permits are given out differently in each deer management area but you can usually only get one and our camp lies on the line between to areas so we can get permits from either area but there havent been any given out in the last 3 years.

Depends on the county, but each person
purchasing a hunting license is issued
5 tags with their license ( all printed up
as one unit)
Some counties, you're allowed to use
each of those tags to take a deer.
Some you're not allowed but maybe two.
There are some circumstances where
the property owner has the state involved
in the game management of the property,
and the state may give as many additional
tags as determined by the biologist working
with the property owner.
It's pretty much left up to the hunter to
check the regulations for the county they'll
be hunting in to determine what's the
legal take.  Sometimes it gets hazy as
to what to do, and it's best to check with
the local GW to make double sure

He said that they took a deer a day,

Where I live, there's the buck tags, then as a land owner (there's a minimum size you must own) I can buy numerous doe tags, at least that's the way it was last year.

Hunting private land allows you to shoot more deer...  (does)

Here in TN, Unit L, we can take 3 doe a day, and a 2 buck limit for the season (1 buck a day limit).  But there is an earn a buck program in CWD areas, so I guess you can take more.  I never added it up but it's a bunch.

https://www.eregulations.com/tennessee/hunting/deer-seasons-bag-limits/

Aug. 27 - 29, private land and archery only (I think this is the velvet hunt) - 9 doe
Archery Sept. 25 - Oct. 29 and Nov. 1-5 - 30 doe
Young Sportsman Oct. 30-31 and Jan. 8-9, 12 doe
Muzzle Loader Nov. 6-19 - 42 doe
Gun Nov. 20 - Jan. 2 - 132 doe

So theoretically if my math is right, you can get 225 doe, 2 bucks and however many earn a bucks you get in the CWD areas.  Oh, and some WMA deer do not count toward season limits, like Ft Campbell, KY. Yea, No!, not going to field dress and process that many.

In southern Minnesota where I live one. But we can legally party hunt and fill tags of others in our party.

Im sure it was. I can't even remember
exactly when he passed,  so it's been
a pretty good while back
Back then, most of this region was
one buck only for the year, no does
I would imagine that was what brought
the subject up when he commented

In Ct, if circumstances allow, meaning you do all and have access:

 Archery, 4
Firearms state land, 1, private land 2.
Muzzleloader state land 1, private land 2.
 Landowner, 2.

 12 in total
Hold still while I overthink this.

Normally, we are limited to one buck...and generally in my area, 1 or 2 antlerless, depending upon the estimated deer population.
We can if we wish, sign over our antlerless permits to another hunter, which I usually do with my grandson.
