Those 30/30 Spitzers are coming around
« on: March 26, 2004, 03:20:37 PM »
Today I had my best result from the NEF30/30 shooting 125gr Sierra Spitzer;
 4 shots,  5/16"  @ 50 yards. The powder I tried was the one Sierra recommended. 28.3 grains of IMR 4198.
  The first two shots after zero were same hole.
  Starting to look up. 100 yards will be next.

good job RV,i will be out shooting soon too.the weather is looking good here now but we are having some rain.have you given any throught to any 150gr spitzers of some kind?you may want to try some next.i think the Hor 150gr SST or Nosler 150gr BT  would make a good deer bullets out of the 30-30.

  I have about a thousand FMJ 150gr spitzers(Bulk stuff) that I tried 5 shots with 34.5 gr of IMR4064, at 50 yards = 3/4" group. Those bullets vary in weight so I group them carefully by weight before loading. I was yery pleased with the first test with those. Once I get the 125 grainers figured out I'll move up the scale.

I don't know how the would shoot in the NEF 30-30 but I would try the Barnes X bullets as well. Due to thier design, even the 110 grain X bullet is suggested by Barnes for deer and deer and antelope as is the 130 and 140 grain X bullets. The old 30-30 should get decent velocity from these lighter bullets but the X will do a job on deer like no other lighter bullets can do.
shot placement is everything.
