music experts, ..Insular and presumptive
« on: November 18, 2020, 11:21:13 PM »
I recently saw a list of. "the ten most popular songs of all time" !  Immediately it struck me as assuming a great deal on the judges' part.
This is not a discussion on the relative merits of the the songs listed, but a discussion of narrow views and poor word choices. This group of critics attempted to list ..."the top ten songs of all time.!
Now, that is a very broad statement...and I suspect coming from a very narrow view.  Perhaps they should have parenthetically mentioned chronological and geographical time frames (basically, when and where) !

  Their conclusions are laughable..
  1) Their headline didn't mention sales of music, which is more a modern day situation.

  2)  They seemingly didn't consider that music is likely, nearly as old as mankind itself, since we have record of at least 7,000 years of it's continued enjoyment.

  3) They don't seem to consider the music of the middle ages, when most music was centered around the clerical; Gregorian chants etc.

  4)  How can they know for instance, just how popular certain forms of music were for instance, from 700 to 200 BCE?

  5) it is almost laughable that their list is composed of only songs from the last 30 to 40 years of human history..

Perhaps they should have been slightly less inclusive and said something such as, "the best songs of the last 75 years, or even the last century".
Then too; it would seem that the term "best" is very subjective to various individuals.

I agree, however most "best of all time" should be prefaced by "IN OUR OPINION" .  Since this was written in Rolling Stone magazine, I would automatically assume it is oriented to their readers.  I am sure a Jazz or Gospel magazine would have a much different list.  Like most things, best taken with a grain of salt.  Most guitar fanatics would be surprised to find Walter Trout listed as #5 in the BBC listeners poll of top guitar players.  He is almost unheard of in the USA, where he lives but very popular in Europe.

Music is purely subjective so any of these "lists" are a joke.

Music is only a form of subjective entertainment. You like it or you don't.

Many many people in the 21st
century confuse the definition
of noise and music

These hoodrats around here
will hear that " THOOMP THOOMP
THOOMP THOOMP THOOMP.  ."
and declare " d*** man! Dats some
good m***** f****** s*** ! !"

Agreed; a simple, "in our opinion" would have gone a long way toward clarification !  ..And yes, that thump, thump, thump we hear emanating from cars now and then, is truly disturbing.
I wonder if the folks with those abrasive "thumpers" think everyone has to like their noise.
...Or are they just trying to be abrasive ?

I assume ALL "best of..." is an opinion piece aimed at the authors audience.  After all the best marketing is preaching to the choir - they already believe!!!  Even "polls" are just a reflection of the folks who are polled.  I am sure Walter would not have scored high with folks who only listen to classical music.  However in his own genre, blues guitar, he is a great musician and a nice guy.

Argent,

I do enjoy classical music especially Bach organ music, but I was referring to Walter Trout who is a blues guitar player.  Meet him in San Diego and watched him perform at a small club there.

Merle Haggard never sung a bad song, and Bob Wills never hit a wrong note on a fiddle.
But then again Stevie Nick's and Lindsey Buckingham done a pretty good job on Dreams.
And Darrell McCall didn't need Willy Nelsons' help when he recorded "Lily Dale".
