Cleaning question
« on: March 18, 2004, 07:06:59 AM »
I recently purchased my first marlin an 1895M 450. I finally shot it last weekend, I new it was going to kick but I had no idea it would kick like it did.

I was reading the instruction manual and it said to remove the lever and pull the bolt for proper cleaning. Is this normal practice? My first deer rifle was a winchester 94 and I don't ever remember doing this.

cleaning Marlin lever actions

Removing the bolt makes it possible to clean the bore from the breech (always preferred) instead of cleaning from the muzzle.  This is for detailed stripping and cleaning.  This is done maybe a couple of times a year and always after firing black powder loads.

Yeah, I know.  Being lazy, I almost always clean from the muzzle, and just brush and wipe out the breech area.  This is the routine cleaning after shooting, and seems to be enough to keep the rifle accurate enough for hunting.

I enjoy doing a thorough cleaning everytime I shoot my rifles so I was glad to find out I could pull the bolt. The more I find out about this rifle the more I like it. I'm already looking into getting a second lever gun in a lighter caliber.

Bushnell Boy,
Removing a Marlin bolt is very simple and makes cleaning easy.  The 94 Win bolt removal is a major job.  You have to partially disassemble the rifle to do it...not worth it.
You can cure most of your recoil problems by replacing the factory Marlin pad with a Pachmeyer decelerator or a Kick-eez pad.  It will feel like a different gun with a pad replacement.
