Here comes a heretic..(rimfire style).
« on: January 23, 2021, 03:42:10 AM »
I have owned over the years, 3 different Ruger 10/22s.  They are a marvelous little rifle, and one that brought more excitement to rimfire shooting.  I like Rugers in general very much..myb most common carry gun is a Ruger

...But I recently bought a 10/22 clone, which I have to admit, is much advanced over the 10/22.  The rifle I speak of is the TCR22, by Thompson Center (S&W).  A bit more money than a 10/22, but there are are several features which the 10/22 doesn't offer..
  1) threaded muzzle. 2)machined in picatinny rail. 3) Day~glow front sight.  4) fully adjustable peep sight.
   5) Last shot hold open (w/issue magazine. 6) Extended mag release. 7) Extended charging handle. 8)  Magpul stock w/M rail provision 9) Rear of bolt housing drilled, so bore can be cleaned from the rear.

Then also for the extra $$..along with the rifle , I got 1) A soft case w/TC logo 2) A sling w/TC logo  and
  3) A very nice red/green, compact red dot optic.

..But that is only part of the story....    Hard to explain, but this little rifle is just plain fun to shoot !! .. And the Magpul stock is a joy to use..
Like the 10/22 it will digest almost anything..(although I haven't tried anything from a green box, since I rarely buy them).

The most accurate stock 10/22 I ever shot, was the original I bought in 1965..a first year production #66XX.

The other two, I put aftermarket bull barrels on.  This little TC would give any of the three a real run!

This is in no way, an attempt to disparage Ruger, since we can thank Bill Ruger for his original, very excellent design!
A final word..the last round hold open, depends upon the design of the magazine.  I use my Ruger magazines almost exclusively, sine I consider using the TC magazine, a PIA to use.  I don't just go to my range , just to burn ammo.
I usually sight in my guns , then go hunting...and I cannot recall a time while hunting, that I used 10 rounds up before reloading.
I posted this for anyone considering adding a .22 semi auto to their gun locker..take a serious look at the TCR22 !

Good review.
But I'm not in the market for another rifle.
I just gave a nephew my Remington 511, my Savage Mark II, and a youth model NEF 20 gauge.
I kept my Cricket, at 2.5 pounds it's a pleasure to carry, and my old Sears 43 (aka marlin 81).

Of course here's Nancy's rifle.

I understand you clearly, Bug !  About 2 years ago, I disbursed most of my guns between my grandsons..cut myself down to a couple big game rifles and a couple rimfires..

Then it wasn't too long...and I started buying more guns again!  Yup! I bought abiut half a dozen, including the TC, a Ruger American  in .450 bushmaster, and a couple handguns ...   Old habits die hard ! ;) ;D

Well, I did buy a NAA Ranger .22magnum, but I just drool on the different guns at my two LGSs and force myself out the door.
Not to mention that we are spending a fortune landscaping the back yard, so.......

I have bought some more fishing tackle, that I don't use. :o ;D

When that rifle first came out I read about it and it was all positive, I wanted one , BUT, I had quit hunting rabbits by then, had my Stevens 87J which worked just fine and was also coveting, to the point of all most buying a Winchester 490.
As I said though I had no need for a new one, and by then had stopped shooting period which just a year or so earlier I did a lot of.

If I had temporary gun buying insanity, I would get the original old style Thompson .22 as it was when it first came out. (As a side note, I came within a hairs breadth of buying a Ruger 10/22 with Euro style Schnabel stock that was staring at me from the gun shop in my home town; it was HARD to walk away as it had a good price.)

I still want a Winchester 490 and the vintage Remington that was sold in the same era, but  there is no money burning a hole in my pocket.

I read a few reviews of the original Thompson and they talked about a lot of failures to feed and eject, don't know if it was fixable.

Did some checking at Rimfire Central and it seems there was/is a problem with different magazines.
Now glad I did not get one. 8)

The only trouble I saw on Rimfire central was that the original magazine was slow to eject, but just pressing a finger on the stock beside the magazine ..and it would drop out.
....But as I said earlier, I use my extra 10/22 magazines normally, and yes when I use the original magazine, sometimes I must touch my index finger to the side of the stock, to help the magazine drop better.
