Polar vortex bringing 'bitterly cold temperatures,' wind chills to much of US
Temperatures are currently 20 degrees to 30 degrees below average in some parts
Greg NormanBy Greg Norman | Fox News

National Forecast, Feb. 8
The polar vortex that ushered in a blast of arctic air across the U.S. is bringing "bitterly cold temperatures" to most of the nation’s midsection Monday, where some areas may experience "dangerous wind chills" as low as –50 degrees, the National Weather Service is warning.

As of Monday morning, cities like Chicago, Milwaukee and Des Moines, Iowa are waking up to temperatures around 0 degrees, while conditions in Minneapolis are hovering near 10 below zero. Wind chill advisories are also in effect for a region stretching from Montana to Michigan.

"Residents across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest will start off the work week with continued below average temperatures and brutal wind chills," the NWS said in an advisory. "Wind chill values well below zero and as low as -50 degrees could be experienced at times across this region."

SECOND MAJOR SNOWSTORM IN A WEEK BLANKETS NORTHEAST

The NWS says the current cold airmass stretches as far south as Oklahoma and as far east as the Ohio Valley.

"Widespread temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below average can found across these areas thanks to a strong high-pressure system and constant flow of bitter arctic air from southwest Canada," it added.

Meanwhile, "multiple rounds of wintry precipitation are expected from the Southern/Central Plains to the Northeast," according to the NWS.

"Starting with today, light snowfall is expected to continue across the Northern Rockies and add to the recent fresh snowpack that has accumulated over the last several days," the advisory said. "Light snow will also be found across the Central Plains and Midwest today as a wave of low pressure develops along the frontal boundary and moves toward the Northeast by Tuesday.

"Generally around 2 to 4 inches of snow can be expected for these locations, with higher amounts up to 6 inches possible across the Northeast," it added.

Then by Wednesday morning, more wintry weather is forecast to develop from the southern Plains to the Midwest.

"More impactful freezing rain accretion will be possible and this time stretch from northeast Oklahoma to northern Kentucky," the NWS said.

But not all of the country is experiencing the deep chill.

"Much of the Southeast and south-central U.S. will enjoy above average temperatures through Wednesday," according to the NWS.

-15 here right now.
I just went out to take out the garbage and get the mail bare-foot but tomorrow I will put on socks.
We are 5 degrees North of long-john temps but outside it is so bright and sunny , one of the beauties of this weather, plus traffic is down considerably.

I have never had to endure -15 degrees. I did have to go to work in -10 degree weather once. I owned one of the few vehicles that would start that morning. Today you better bring some big, strong, people if you are going to drag me outside anywhere close to those temperatures.

We made it all the way up to 2 above zero today (for about an hour). It was only -6 this morning yesterday morning was -17. The weather man is saying the weekend may be colder than that. I've been pretty busy at work welding on snow plows at these temps the snow gets hard and the steel brittle.

Friday it is supposed to drop to -22 up here, to me, -20 long john weather but as it is only for one day, I doubt I will dig them out.
In my life the coldest day up here I remember was a daytime high of -18, I remember it well as I had to go out to the parking lot and put a new starter on my '66 Plymouth Fury.
You do learn to work faster. but at that working in the quit atmosphere under a car at -18,  is a lot milder than working under a hood with a wind at -10 with a dying battery.

At one time I lived just below (chicago) those vast frozen wastelands of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
That's why I've been in Georgia for more that 51 years.  And I'm still cold after 26 years of living in Illinois. ;D

As I sit here in sunny Arizona I think why I live in this state. It doesn't take much figuring out to me. Now I know why we have so many snow birds. Just wished they would keep their left wing democratic ways where they come from. Better yet just stay home.

A few years ago it was -20 here and my daughter waited for almost 2 hours at the bus stop before she finally came in. She looked pretty cold by that point. I thought she may have missed the bus so we drove down the street to check the other bus stops to see if the bus came. At one of the stops there was a teenage boy wearing shorts and a sweatshirt, no jacket. He didn't even look cold even though he'd been out in that weather for 2 hours. We laughed and went back home. The bus did eventually come, they had a tough time getting it started apparently.

We have had -20 here a few times over the years. I think the coldest I can remember was -24.  About 4 inches of snow here this morning and still snowing. the landscape is really pretty with a fresh blanket of snow, but I can do without it. When I was younger, I kind of welcomed the winters, but as I aged, I don't like winter time much anymore. I just hope we don't get any snows that is measured in feet this year.

Another cold day here in the deep south. It was 50 when I got up this morning and is to go to 65-70 for a high. Thermometers here don't have minus readings on them.

I think when the vortex reaches here Sunday in Mohave Valley Arizona the low is supposed to be 59 degrees. Pretty warm in the summers here but don't have to worry about the white stuff in the winter.

Forecast for the Texas Hill country calls for several days of mid teens at night and several days with highs in the thirties starting Saturday.  Stocked up with plenty of firewood out of the weather to keep it dry just in case which is par for the course considering our main source of heat is a wood burning stove with a couple of radiant heaters to supplement when it gets really cold.
