LIVE UPDATES: Derek Chauvin held at Minnesota max security prison awaiting sentencing
Americans reacted as Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd

Minneapolis and the nation react to Derek Chauvin guilty verdict
Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the murder of George Floyd, is expected to be held at a maximum-security prison in Minnesota for the next eight weeks as he awaits sentencing.

The nation reacted Tuesday after a panel of jurors found Chauvin guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin held his knee against Floyd's upper body for nine minutes and 29 seconds.

It took the jury about 10 hours and 20 minutes to reach a decision, which was read late in the afternoon in a city on edge regarding the possibility of more unrest like that that erupted last spring.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections said Tuesday night that Chauvin was at the state's maximum-security prison in Oak Park Heights, due to an arrangement with the county sheriff and the Department of Corrections. That's the same prison where Chauvin was moved after his arrest for security reasons.

Each count carries a different maximum sentence: 40 years for second-degree unintentional murder, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. But Minnesota has sentencing guidelines that call for far less.

FAST FACTS
The jury was made up of seven women and five men. Six jurors were White, four were Black and two identified as multiracial

Chauvin's sentencing is scheduled for eight weeks from now, the judge said. He could be sent to prison for decades.

President Biden and Vice President Harris addressed the verdict from the White House and said the decision could be a "giant step forward in the march toward justice in America."

"It ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism," Biden said. "Systemic racism -- a stain on our nation’s soul."

Harris thanked the jury, and the Floyd family, saying the verdict brought "a sigh of relief" but "cannot take away the pain."

After Derek Chauvin verdict, Garland announces DOJ Minneapolis policing probe

"Yesterday’s verdict in the state criminal trial does not address potentially systemic policing issues in Minneapolis," Garland said during a press conference.

"I strongly believe that good officers do not want to work in systems that allow bad practices," the U.S. attorney general continued. "Good officers welcome accountability because accountability is an essential part of building trust with the community and public safety requires public trust."

Garland said the probe will be a "fully comprehensive review" that will look into whether the Minneapolis Police Department has a "pattern or practice of unconstitutional or unlawful policing." He specified that this includes "using excessive force, including during protests," as well as "discriminatory conduct and whether its treatment of those with behavioral health disabilities is unlawful."

The investigation will be conducted by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Minnesota, and will examine the MPD's policies, training, supervision, use of force provisions, systems of accountability, and more in determining whether or not "other mechanisms" are needed to be put in place.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to announce that the Justice Department is opening a sweeping investigation into policing practices in Minneapolis after the guilty verdict in George Floyd's death, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The announcement comes a day after former officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder and manslaughter in Floyd's death last May, setting off a wave of relief but also sadness across the country. The Black man's death prompted months of mass protests against policing in the U.S.

The Justice Department is already investigating whether the officers involved in Floyd's death violated Floyd's civil rights. The investigation announced Wednesday is known as a "pattern or practice" and will be a more sweeping probe of the entire department and may result in major changes to policing there, the official said. The official had direct knowledge of the matter but was not authorized to speak publicly about the upcoming announcement, planned for Wednesday morning.

The investigation will examine practices used by police and whether the department engages in discriminatory practices. It will also look into the department's handling of misconduct allegations among other things, the person said. It's unclear whether the years under investigation will begin when Floyd died or before. The Justice Department had no comment.

FOR CONTEXT:
At a press conference after the Chauvin verdicts were announced, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who spearheaded prosecution in the case, invoked the memories Breonna Taylor.

He also listed Rodney King, Abner Louima, Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo and others.

“This has to end. We want true justice. That’s not one case,” Ellison said. “That is a social transformation that says no one is beneath the law and no one is above it. This verdict reminds us that we must make enduring, systemic societal change.”

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Republican and the first Black attorney general in the state, was the special prosecutor who investigated the actions of the Louisville police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Taylor during a warrant search last year.

The investigation culminated in a grand jury ruling that did not charge any of the officers in the Black woman's death. The shooting sparked protests in Louisville alongside national protests over racial injustice and police misconduct.

The mother of Breonna Taylor reacted Tuesday after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on all three counts, including murder, in the death of George Floyd.

“Today justice has been served but we are not [done] fighting for justice for all the victims and families [who] haven’t received theirs,” Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, wrote on Twitter. “This isn’t over.”

She included hashtags of the names of other Black or minority individuals killed or seriously injured by police or White vigilantes: Ahmaud Arbery, AdamToledo, Jacob Blake, Daunte Wright, and Sean Monterrosa.

Taylor’s sister, Juniyah Palmer, also reacted to the verdicts, tweeting: “Today is a good day... but there are more battles to win.”

Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who investigator have said first fired at officers conducting a warrant at the apartment the night Taylor was killed, referenced the Louisville Police Department on Facebook, writing “take notes” and sharing an image that said “Thank you God.”

Chauvin was booked into MCF-Oak Park Heights on Tuesday at 4:55 p.m., Fox News has learned. A new booking photo is expected to be released Wednesday.

He is on “administrative segregation status” and is being housed in the prison's administrative control unit, which "has the state’s highest level of security, and is the appropriate placement for his safety," Minnesota Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sarah Fitzgerald told Fox News in an email.

The last death of an incarcerated person by another incarcerated person at Oak Park Heights occurred in 2013, Fitzgerald said. The death did not occur in the administrative control unit. The last suicide at Oak Park Heights was also in 2013.

That's the same prison where Chauvin was moved after his arrest for security reasons, according to The Associated Press. Chauvin, who had been free on bail for the last several months, was handcuffed immediately after the verdicts were read at the Hennepin County Government Center and was taken into custody. A sheriff's deputy escorted him out of the courtroom through an interior door.

He probably will appeal but that takes time and in the meantime if they put him in the general population in prison and not solitary he probably won't last long in prison.

.
Obviously, if they put him in general population, then the state will be guilty of murder.  Perhaps then, they can put the governor on trial..
