Harris blames refusal to visit the border on COVID-19
Vice President Kamala Harris has been widely criticized for her absence from the U.S.-Mexico border region amid the crisis that she has been tasked with helping to solve, and the White House was accused by detractors Monday of trying its best to provide cover for Harris.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that Harris’ focus is not "on the border," but on the "diplomatic level. Harris recently said that she had not made any trips to the border due to the coronavirus risks.

"I would tell you also that her focus is not on the border. It's on addressing the root causes in the Northern Triangle," Psaki said.


In March, Biden appointed Harris as his point person to address the migrant surge at the southern border.

Political observers--even then-- saw the job as fraught with political risk for Harris with little upside. There seems to be little doubt of her continued interest in being president, and a continuing disaster at the border would all but eliminate her—especially since this job has been her highest-profile task.

Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, joined Fox News’ "Fox & Friends" on Monday and said harris is using COVID-19 as an excuse to avoid visiting the border.

"[Coronavirus is] the excuse that this administration is going to use. And look at her. She's been jet-setting around this country, going to all the different blue states, talking about this infrastructure plan and everything else. So, no, this isn't COVID, Kamala. And you know it," he said.
