Big alien fish
« on: May 03, 2021, 06:28:27 PM »
I saw where a man caught a 17 pound
Koi,  one of those ornamental carp
that the japanese and a good many
yuppies are so enamored over.
Of course, they're not a native fish,
so it had to have been turned out by
somebody, probably an enthusiast
that was no longer enthused.
We've got a bunch of invasive species
in this country now. There's some
lakes here that have a population of
Tilapia that were released, and are
making hash out of those lakes, I
guess like aquatic feral hogs

(Tried to post a link, but it no workee)

Yeah, those armored catfish  are starting to make their presence known here in Texas.  Got too big for the aquarium so they dumped'em in the  lake.

Good thing about the Great White North, very few can survive the frozen rivers and lakes.

Strange thing is the what they call a bullhead in Europe a variety of Sculpin has been found to dine on Zebra Mussels up in the Duluth harbor.
They are not sure how to view that.

I was told by my fish supplier for my pond that Coy and Armors, don't reproduce but they sure keep the algae down in my quarter acre pond. I'd hate for one of my two white armors to grab my toe and swim me to the bottom. They have to be three feet long now. My four coy are about 16 inches long now. The only thing I don't like about them, I had to quit scuba diving in my pond cause I can't see anymore. They keep it pretty muddied up from rooting in the bottom.

If they don't reproduce, how did they come to be?

I just did a search, why I haven't thought of doing this before, I don't know but there are some pretty good articles on the reproductions of coy and armors. Obviously, my fish farmer gets sexed fish in so they won't breed in his client's ponds. I guess I misunderstood him. I was still in shock with the price he charged me for four of the coy.

Figured that. The armored catfish here in Texas ARE breeding and when caught are supposed to be killed.

Sounds like good bow fishing opportunity for you out in Texas. Years ago, I had to control the carp population at some lake near me and we took to the bow for that. From a canoe, what a hell of a ride.

Bow fishing for carpet, and gar is popular where I'm originally from, but not so much here in the Texas Panhandle.
