Rare 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible gets record $4.8 million auction bid, but it's not enough
French export is one of three muscle cars like it

A rare 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible muscle car received a high bid of $4.8 million at the Mecum Auctions event in Indianapolis Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to seal the deal.

This 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda is one of three built with a 426 Hemi V8 and four-speed manual transmission.

The car is just one of three like it that were built with a 426 Hemi V8 and four-speed manual transmission that year and was originally exported to a buyer in France.

One of  the other examples was auctioned at a Mecum event in 2014 for $3.5 million, which remains a record for the model and traditional muscle cars, but the $4.8 million offer wasn't high enough to meet the seller's reserve price on the car in Indianapolis, which had a pre-auction estimate up to $6.5 million.

Plymouth built a total of 11 or 12 ‘Cuda Convertibles with the 426 Hemi V8 in 1971, the others with automatic transmissions, but even the defunct brand's current owner, Stellantis, isn't exactly sure how many.

There were several multimillion-dollar sales of American cars in Indianapolis, however, that included a 1936 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Convertible Berline for $2,800,000, a 1967 Shelby 427 S/C Cobra Roadster for $2,800,000 and a 1930 Duesenberg Model SJ Rollston Convertible that for $2,970,000.

yup a 71 hemi cuda convertible is the holy grail for mopar collectors. Wheres my time machine!!! I can remember even about ten years ago when one went for a 180k at barrette the crowd went nuts. Even then muscle car prices were at record highs. I owned a ls6 chevelle and at that time they were pulling down a 150k and you can but one today for under a 100k. Saw one at a local car show that was mint with 80k on the windshield 3 years ago. Sure wish i would have been in better financial shape then. If that car was for sale today at that price id find a way to come up wiht the money. But the muscle car market is on another up swing right now. Im sure that guy is kicking himself in the ass for selling it that cheap. Want some car buying advice. GTO!! Mopar prices are through the roof. Gm muscle cars like camaros chevelles and 442s are high. but for some reason gtos havent taken off. A nice 442 or ss chevelle will set you back a 100k today. You can pick up a nice gto for half that money. Ive even seen nice gto judges for not much over 50k. Another market thats creeping up is the 74-80 camaros. The firebirds of that era are catching up to the big buck cars. camaros can still be bought for 20-30 k and nice ones are going up every year because most of them had lame motors and were modfied or had transplants. Originals are getting hard to find. Odd thing is say if you take a 78 camaro z and a 78 vette the camaro will pull down twice the money.
