Simmons or Tasco????
« on: February 26, 2004, 08:59:53 PM »
I am looking at a Simmons 44 Mag 3 X 10 or a Tasco World Class 3 X 9 scope for my new 223 ultra.

Are both good?  Is one better than the other?

Anyone with bad or good experiences with either?

Thanks ahead

Asking which optics are better is like asking which pick up truck is better. Everyone has an opinion about it. Myself I like Bushnell. My only advice is put a smuch money into optics that you can afford. I have owned Tasco I have owned Simmons. Of the 2 I preferred Simmons.

Handi: Check eabco.com A lot of optics for a fair price.
Of Tasco and Simmons, I've had good luck with Simmmons.
I bought a 20X Tasco spotting scope, with it I could not make out a .45 cal. hole in the black at 50 yds. Sent it in and they "fixed" it, still could make out that .45 cal. hole.
As for Bushnell, bought a 3200 rainguard scope great optics!! But! one reason I bought it over a Leopold was to take advantage of thier free parka offer, that was over a year ago and still no parka. <>< Duce:

The most important thing I think you should check is "Can You See out of it" also can you see in a dark spot like in the woods. I wear glasses; there are a lot of scopes I can't see out of, Tasco being one of them. Simmons has clear glass...when in the store put the scope on a try stock and look through it you'll be able to see the one you want

Handirifle:

Ask who ever is showing you the scopes,if you can look thru them both in natural light...not the store flourecensent lights.Take them over to the door  and look outside with them, preferably not thru another piece of glass,or window screen. You can get a false impression of the true clarity of a scope under flourecensent lighting. As long as the scopes your getting has muti-coated lens on them both inside and outside they will be bright and sharp. While both of your choices are pretty good, try to find a Aetec scope on sale or one like mine the Whitetail Expidition on sale. The difference will astound you when you look thru them, and for the money you can't go wrong with them. I have had more Tasco scopes fail on me than any other brand,so(IMHO).. even if I was given one...I would trade it or give it away....My choice on scopes on a budget...the high end Simmons(that's why the stopped making the Whitetail Expidition..cost too much...didn't fit in their budget line) next up would be the Leupolds Vari X 1...I have both and love them....even though your not spending $200 and more on a scope you can still get  some great optics with these brands when you can find them.

Hope that helps...

Handirifle,
I didn't want to spend too much on a new scope, so I cheaped out. I tried both the Tasco 3-9x40, and the Simmons 3-9x50, and didn't like either once I tried shooting with them on my Ultra-Varmint. I ended up getting the Bushnel 6-18x50 and I'm much more satisfied with this. I got it at Walmart for $129.00, but it is available on line cheaper than that. The Tasco, and Simmons are now collecting dust, so I didn't save anything on getting them. Maybe I can use them on a another rifle someday, but they're not good enough for the .223.

I have the Tasco 2-7x32 World Class Black Powder scope on my 50 cal CVA Hunterbolt...The scope is brighter than the 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner on my Huntsman.  Four hunting seasons and several hundred shots later I am still on target with that scope and I don't see changing in the near future.  Until one of these scopes actually fails me I will not stop buying cheaper scopes.  I have never paid more than $100 for the seven scopes that I have.  Those range from Tascos to Simmons to Bushnells.  To each his own I say.  Good luck with whatever you choose.

I had 2 Tasco's, and could not get them to focus properly with my glasses! More success with Simmons and even  better with Bushnell & Weaver.

There are better scopes but if I had to chose between them I would recommend the Simmons with no hesitation. I have 2 and have had great luck with them for the money. Try to buy a better higher end model Simmons scope. Check SWFA's "Sample List" for good deals on scopes. I have bought a couple from them at great savings. I have not heard anything good about any of the new Tascos. The older ones were better. I hear the new Tascos are made in China, that is when thier quailty went downhill, to bad, Tasco  scopes were OK a couple of years ago and I have a couple a few years old which are pretty good....<><....

I have had good luck with 2 Simmons so far.   I had one CHEAP Tasco on a rimfire that gave out after a couple of years but in all fairness it was a very cheap model to begin with not like the Simmons scopes that I have which are higher end models.  I thought the Bushnells in the same price class looked 'clunky' and cheap compaired to the Simmons.  The Simmons seemed brighter to me also.   I guess time will tell if I made the right choice, so far so good.

Have 2 of the 44 Mag 3 x 10's. One on a Savage 270. Liked it so well I bought another for my Handi 30-06 this year. No problems with either so far. SWFA (riflescopes.com) has the best prices I have found. Around $100 plus shipping.

I have had good luck with  the Pro-Hunter series of Simmons scopes on a 30-06. I like the fixed power when buying cheaper scopes. I have several Tasco straight 4X scopes that I have used for about six years on several maderate recoiling rifles with no trouble.
shot placement is everything.
