Scope base for Enfield No.4 Mk I
« on: February 25, 2004, 03:58:23 PM »
I have what I believe to be an Enfield No.4 MkI rifle that needs to be scoped. I found a base in Gunparts Inc. for around $42.00 but it didn't say anything about drilling and tapping. Is there a scope base that is commonly used for these rifles. The reciever seems to have little room for one. Any help would be appreaciated.  Thanks.           greer

I had one drilled & tapped many years ago,
and you are right, there is very little metal
left around the hole.  I have had no problems though.

Thanks for the information. The no drill and tap mounts say they will not fit the .308 Enfields. I thought that was odd. Of course that's what this one is. I would be willing to drill and tap it if I knew where to get a base. I might call the tech folks at Brownell's. At least I'm learning a few things.   Thanks again.           greer

I'm sure that the 308 Enfields they refer to are the Isapore 308's built in the 60's that are based on a modified No 1 action not the NO 4 action

http://www.scopemounts.com/insta.htm

I found this site.  Kinda fun because it was close to my hometown growing up.  They had one for the Enfield 4 & 5's.  They are non-drill/tap style.  Even have a picture of one in service.  Not super clear, but gives you an idea.

Called and spoke to the owner about my 8mm mauser.  He said he would put the mount on for me over Easter when I visit my parents.

Greer!  I don't believe they ever made the no4 mk1's in 308.  They did (I believe) rebarrel some of the no4 mk1 sniper rifles to 308 at some point.  Is it sporterized?  Some one certainly could have modified it to 308.  If it is original it may be a rare piece and you might want to do a bit of research before drilling anything.

Here is a link to the Lee Enfield forum.  You REALLY ought to check it out.

That being said.  The fact that it is chambered for 308 should not matter, since it was (I'm pretty sure) originally chambered for 303 the ATI scope mount should fit.

Here are some pics of the sniper rifles.

I've got one of the S&K mounts on my #4 Mk 1. It works just fine - replaces the rear sight and is very easy to install.
