THREE NEW RIFLES
« on: August 23, 2021, 03:47:00 PM »
I don't know if I mentioned it here or not but a while back I bought Nancy a new Ruger 10/22, then, I broke down and bought one for my self (I haven't fired it yet) and then I mentioned over on RFC that I wished I had another Remington model 581, and a member there had one at a good price so I bought it.  The following is a description of the 581.
The previous owner installed a 22" heavy barrel, the action was threaded and the barrel screwed in, the action was glass bedded, the barrel is completely free floated, it has a TIMNEY trigger that breaks at about one (1) pound, and the butt plate is a custom wooden plate instead of plastic.
It's a beautiful rifle.
I don't have pictures yet of my two new rifles but I'll post Nancy's rifle when I had just finished installing her new stock.

One of the most useful guns that's sold

( I never did see any of the free 22 rifles
that all these people swore they were
throwing in the trash during the first
gouger- induced 22 ammo shortage.
I know of a couple of people that used
profanity towards me when I stated
that people were lining up at the local
stores to rush in and buy up 22 ammo.
I never received acknowledgement of
that fact or an apology either one.
Oh well.  . )
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

.
I did like those 6Remington 581 rifles, even though I was not a big fan of the Nylon 66, and certainly not the Viper.
Back in the 1960s or 70s, I had two rifles in mind..both bolt actions.. The Remington 581 and the Winchester 320.

My wife presenyted me with one of them for Christmas..it was the Winchester model 320 !  I was amazed at how accurate that rifle was..right out of the box !

I think it run about $55 back then..and I was estatic over the accuracy, so I did some checking, to find out why this was so..
I found out that the rifle was made in Australia..by the same manufacturer, who came to the US and started building Kimbers!

Australia can build accurate .22s  Just check out LITHGOW rifles.

The Winchester 320 rifles are prized, if you can find one.  My son still has that 320..and it is not going anywhere....anytime soon!

  Here's a Winchester 320;

Yeah, both of those rifles were very accurate and the Winchester 320 had it for looks.
However, the 581 had an action with 6 locking lugs and was strong enough to convert to small centerfire rounds.
I'm hoping that bull barrel and Timney trigger will make it a true target rifle.  The original 581 came with scrawney barrels.
Oh, the 581 has a very fast lock time.

Timney never made a trigger for the 581, but they did for the Remington 788 which was identical in every way except size.
So gunsmiths around the country would buy 788 triggers and adapt them to 581s.
