  I always featured the Aussies as highly individualistic folks..never expected they would "come to heel" for something like this!
  Perhaps we should have more strongly noted..when they obediently turned in their guns..

Simple answer. They willingly turned their well being to the Australian government. They turned in their ability to disagree, the same day they turned in their guns.
