Why all the grease?

Every now and then I see a post on new guns about sticking cases or shells that won't eject.  Sometimes the solution is a good cleaning.  All new guns (every brand) come new with a large amount of grease all over them.

Why do they have this excessive nasty grease and oil all over them?  I am sure their is a good reason, I just don't know what it is.

I don't think rust is the issue, because my guns don't rust and I don't cake grease on my firearms.

Just a wondering.

I take it you havn't served in the military . Nothing like getting a rifle that had been stored in cosmoline (? sp). Sticky gooey crap to have to clean off of a weapon. I hope they don't still use that stuff !  :eek:

 I think rust IS the issue. If you leave one of these guns sit unprotected for 6 months, I'd bet you would have rust, even indoors. The conditions these guns are shipped, or stored in at distributors, and gun stores, may also lead to quick rusting, so to protect the guns, and their investment, they grease them up. Cosmoline is still readily found in the military surplus guns, it does do it's job. Some surplus guns come out of 60 years of storage, and no rust. They're a pain to clean off, but worth the time invested to have a rust free gun.

The last 12mos. I bought seven NEF or H&Rs some would have grease or oil others would not. I don't know what's the differents. Momma said slow down this year but I would like to find a pattern. :-)  8)

For all those with too much grease there are some the other way. A friend just last week told me of looking at a brand new Handi at Kittery Trading Post in Maine that had a  light coating of rust on parts of the barrel!!....<><.... :shock:

Rather see a little grease on the gun than rust.  At least the grease is easy to clean off given a little time and effort.  I don't grease up my guns to store them I just give them a light coat of oil and they are good to go.  Never had a rust problem with any guns I own.

Just think what would happen to one coming here in the winter without all that grease.  Subject it to 40 below for a day in the belly of a plane, or the back of a truck.  Then bring it inside, instant frost coating inside and out.  Every spring I have to take all the guns I have used that winter and disassemble them and it usually takes the wire wheel on my grinder to get the rust off.  Then I coat everything with oil, no grease, it gets too stiff here in the winter.

Rust makes sense now.  I never thought about the guns sitting around in warehouses for extended periods awaiting shipment.

Sourdough-Can you tell a difference in -40 below and -10 below? :wink:
