New glider speed record pending. This was for a 466 mile takeoff and return to same airport. 160.26 mph avg. speed! Flight took place in the Minden, NV area. Attached is a stock picture of the glider that was used.

  In glider practice, is your landing place more or less at the mercy of rising air currents, or can you usually pre-select your landing place?

If flying cross country is always possible that you may have to land at either an unintended airport or in a field. Most of the time one plans for conditions but mother nature can always throw in a monkey wrench. If you land out two people can take the glider apart and have it in a trailer in about 30 minutes.
