Ultra and scope rings
« on: March 08, 2004, 09:55:13 AM »
I finaly found an ultra and it should be here someting next week. So I went out and bought a scope and was going to get scope rings when i was wondering if the hammer got in the way of the scope.  SO i guess my real question is can i use medium rings or do i have to use high rings. The scope i bought was a BSA Platinum 6-24 44mm.

thanks

I have a Ultra Varmint in 223.  I recently mounted a Burris 3x9x40 on it using  high Burris Signature rings and the ring offset kit.  In my specific case the next lower Burris rings would not have worked.

I have the BSA Contender 4-16 x 50 on my Ultra, and I used high rings with no hammer problems. There's a 1/8 inch clearance at the A/O ring and barrel,,and about the same at the power ring with closed hammer.
You might be real tight with medium rings even though it's a 44mm.

Illgotten,
I have a Bushnell 6-18X50 and use the Leupold high rings. I believe it requires high rings with almost any scope. I have had two other scopes on this rifle, before I settled on the Bushnell, and they both required high rings.

Leupold high rings from Wally World. Have them on both my Handi rifles with 3 x 10 x 44's. Medium would not work with my particular scopes. Also have a Bushnell 3 x 9 x 40 that would not clear the hammer with med. rings.

I used Leupold medium PRW rings to mount a 3-12x42 Sightron on my Handi 223.  Eye relief and scope length are part of the equation.  I used a couple of pencils as spacers to get an idea of the height required, then mic'ed the pencil.

Of course with the medium rings the hammer extension is mandatory.

Most walmarts have the Leupold Rifleman series Weaver style rings in stock for around $16.99. I went with the high ones on my Simmons 4x12x42 and had them on a Bushnell 6x24x50 as well. They wont sit up that much higher than the medium ones of the same make. There are variances between different manufactures on the hights of the different sizes. If they sit up too high for you you can always return them for the next size down. These are very good rings for as little as your spending on them.

Good Luck

On my .223 Handi with bull barrel and Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 I use high Millet Angle-Locs and they work just perfectly. The Objective bell just clears the barrel and the hammer clears also, although I have to use the hammer extension to get my thumb on the hammer....<><....

Thanks for the input guys, I picked up a pair of Millet High angle-locs today. I think they will work just fine now just have to wait for the rifle to get here, should be just a couple days and then i will be happy.

Thanks
